Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe are phantastic. Colombia is
one of my favourites(particularly Envigado up in Medellin
and Bahia Solano). But why a contest? They all have their
own charm and they certainly bring back wonderful memories.
That is all that matters .

  9. Indonesia! Added by: Mags
[Timestamp: Sun 7 Feb, 0:43 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Nothing beats Indonesia for diversity, culture/historical,
natural beauty, value for money and so on. I've been to
Sumatra, Java and Bali and long to see more of this
incredible country. It is a real shame about the current
    political troubles.
    ~
Second best: Nepal. Cheap, laid back, action-adventure
    oriented, beautiful.
    ~
Go vegetarian. It's good for you and the world.

  10. Brazil first Added by: Tim
[Timestamp: Sun 7 Feb, 3:57 Tasmanian Standard Time]

My personal choice after travelling to approx. 40 countries
on all the inhabited continents is Brazil. Tremendous
geographic diversity, great food, lively (extremely) people,
beautiful beaches (and bathing attire), some interesting
modern architecture, varied colonial history, and very good
tourist infrastructure. As for Africa, my favourites were
Cameroon (great ethnic diversity in a fairly small country)
and Zimbabwe (excellent game parks and tourist
infrastructure without the negatives from overtourism that
Kenya has). But it really depends on what you like, how much
time you have, and what languages you are comfortable with.

  13. GHANA Added by: David (Dcapal@aol.com)
[Timestamp: Sun 7 Feb, 13:17 Tasmanian Standard Time]

As far as Africa is concerned, Ghana has to be the winner,
with Cameroun and Zaire (for the adventure) coming in as
    close seconds.
Outside Africa, I'd have to go with Honduras.

north american indians, inuit, immigrants from every corner
of the world, it is incredible. I am heading to Zimbabwe

countries You┤ve been in Africa, cause all travellers I met
in Westafrica who did the whole continent where absolutely
excited by Ethiopia and Madagascar, but all (about ten).
Also was I surprised, that India, my personal number One,

  44. Zaire River Added by: Heather Ellis - Cairns Australia (heather@altnews.com.au)
[Timestamp: Thu 11 Feb, 14:04 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Years ago I had read about the Zaire River in old National
Geographics, and now those childhood dreams of adventure
    would
soon be reality - I too would be travelling on this famous
river. One of the world's most exciting river journeys lay
    before me.
Space was now a premium on the boat, and with my three-man
tent, shaded area and the motorbike, I took up far too much
room for one person. To move out of this area I had to climb
over bags of dried manioc and bundles of smoked fish and
bushmeat. The mama's kids (four, who were aged between eight
years to sixteen years) were employed by the big Mama to
shell peanuts, but in the heat of the afternoon the four
kids would lie under the shade with me. We would play snap,
    make rag
dolls out of my old sarong, eat juicy pineapples or chew on
sticks of sugar cane, spitting the pulp over the side, and
    finally sleep
out the heat of the day. In Lisala I had bought a big bundle
of long sticks of sugar cane, and had told the kids to help
themselves; it was the Zaire equivalent to a big bag of
    sweets.
My other neighbour was the money changer and his young wife.
Against a stack of timber they had set up a few lengths of
    cloth
for shade. On a stool he had stacks of one, five, and ten
nouveaus zaire notes which he would sell, forty nouveaux
    zaires worth
of change for a fifty nouveaux zaire note. Small change was
scarce, and he was doing a roaring trade with the
    passengers, who
needed small denominations to buy produce from the villagers
    in their pirogues.
For a few days the barges travelled close to the bank, and I
gazed in awe at the thick green forest which mirrored itself
    in the
calm waters of the river as we floated by. In some places,
mud and grass roof huts were dotted all along the bank. I
    had been
sitting with Eric, a young African who spoke good English
and was on his wasy to stay with his Uncle in Kinshasa. He
    would
continue his higher education and hoped one day to go to
    University.
"What a peaceful, carefree life the villagers must lead", I
commented to Eric, as we glided past a little boy and girl
    in a tiny
pirogue, while on the shore a man sat back in a reclining
    cane chair.
"No worries of money, no crime, plenty of fresh food, clean
air. It would be so uncomplicated; get married, have
    children, and
live a simple happy life with family and friends", I
    continued.
"Ah, but what about the mostiques, the malaria, getting sick
and having no doctor, and all the babies that die", he
    replied to my
    idealised comments.
"It is a tough life living in the forest", he said.
As we neared Kinshasa the forests gave way to low hills and
flat lands covered with golden/green grass that wavered in
    the
gentle wind. I sat on one of the steel rope pillars at the
front of the fleet of barges, enjoying the novelty of gazing
    out over wide
open spaces. The river was now choppy, water washed onto the
decks; the crocodiles revelled in this and sat nearby facing
    the
spray, opening their jaws as much as the vines that bound
them would allow. I reflected over the journey that was
    coming to an
end. It had been a very long voyage on a very long river.
The barges had taken twenty-three days to cover 2500
    kilometres to
reach the city of Kinshasa. It had been an amazing adventure
    that I would never forget.

[Timestamp: Fri 12 Feb, 0:56 Tasmanian Standard Time]

For all of you that have been to Bali you would have either
    loved it or hated it....
Bali is a great place. The street sellers will test your
nerve patience, a polite "No Thankyou" will allways work. If
you can spare the time to talk to these sellers, you will
learn more in ten minutes about the Island than you will
    wondering around for days.
Bali Adventure, the great adventure company in Bali can be
recommended for all your rafting, treking and touring needs.
Give Bali a go, get out of Kuta, go up to the mountains, go
to Ubud. Just dont think Bali is Kuta beecause it is not..
    Safe Travelling.

As far as the best country going around its just too easy! There is no place that compares to Indonesia. If you want a relaxing holiday; sit on the beach and soak up the sun and blue waters. If its adventure you need; take a bus ride through Sumatera. If you heart beats to the scenic tune try climbing a volcanoe. But if its a rewarding experience your searching for, just talk to the people.

[Timestamp: Fri 12 Feb, 12:03 Tasmanian Standard Time]

By far the most beautiful country in the world is Bermuda,
but I have to admit that my heart belongs to Africa,
    especially South Africa and Zimbabwe.

  74. Zambia Added by: Tracy (chiremba@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Fri 12 Feb, 17:38 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Why in the world? Certainly not because it's easy to
get around. Because I had a PCV friend, a fish farmer, and
I had one week to find her with only a village name as a
clue (Chinsali), and I FOUND HER because of the unbelievable
help and kindness of a chain of Zambian women, one of whom
fed me toast and eggs for free for two days.
also Zimbabwe and Namibia, but I will always love Zambians.
I still can't believe I did that and survived. (Amebic
    dysentery notwithstanding.)

ALL of them were amazing, each one with its special
flavors, smells, costumes, and people.... But as time goes
by, and more places are added to my list, I can only think
of one as the favourite and only... my own country:
ARGENTINA. And not only because it is REALLY wonderful, but
also because it is HOME !!!!!!

  123. Missing the MADness Added by: Casey (AUSTRALIAN)
[Timestamp: Fri 30 April, 6:09 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I'm so pleased that MADAGASCAR has only been mentioned once
(in passing,by someone who hasn't even been there). Part of
the reason that it is the best exotic locale on earth
(excluding my own country as patriotic fervour and
sentiment prevents me from nominating it in an unbiased
manner)is because there are none of you other knob-ends
there arguing about such trivial things as where the best
country on earth is. It is my deepest hope that the wailing
    indri-indris, boggle-eyed chameleons, sexually-liberated
populants, proud baobabs, curious ringtailed lemurs, exotic
marine life, dinner-plate arachnids, sleeping boa-
constrictors and surreal landscapes remain free of all your
petty diatribes and pedantic worries. Stay out of my
obscenely overcrowded taxi-brousse (where even the driver
has somone sitting in his lap), don't eat my pain
d'chocolat (which is more delectable than any I ate in
Europe), keep your ugly untanned bods out of my piscines
naturelles (set in deep, dark sandstone canyons with lush
riparian vegetation abounding) and don't you dare let me
see you diving off my little island hideaway in the south-
east (which shits all over Nungwi). Keep your western
insanity ... I'm happy with my MADness.

  125. Nobody knows SAO TOME? Added by: Martin (martin.bohnstedt@unitar.org)
[Timestamp: Fri 30 April, 22:28 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Can we get some order please...? People nominating their
home country should say so - nothing against patriotism, but
nevertheless I'd take such opinions with a bucketfull of
salt. Secondly, tell us which countries/regions you actually
    know before voting for one.
Okay, for me: Sao Tome! Medium-priced, tropical climate,
stunning natural beauty, no tourists, no security problems
whatsoever (rare in Central Africa), quiet end-of-the-world
atmosphere, romantic decaying colonial Portuguese flair.
(Have been to 80 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia - live
    in Europe.)
Interesting to see the many votes for Ghana. I've heard
rumours about that place being very nice, but never saw it
expressed that clearly and "democratically". Guess I'll have
    to go there!
