A cholera epidemic has flared up in southern Somalia. Reports from the town of Dinsor in the southern Bay area suggest that the epidemic has claimed up to 20 victims daily over the past six weeks, aggravated by an influx of farmers from rural areas seeking food and water in a time of drought and factional infighting. Travellers are advised not to travel in the southern regions of the troubled country.

A sudden increase in cases of kala azar, or visceral leishmaniasis has occurred in the Horn of Africa. The parasitic disease is endemic in 88 countries and, if untreated, has a mortality rate close to 100 percent.
