The monastery of Lamayuru Gompa sits on a small mountain overlooking the village and its mustard fields. Built at the end of the 10th century, the gompa is Ladakh's oldest holy site - though today only the central building remains from the original structure. Ladakh is situated on the Tibetan plateau, and is a predominantly Buddhist region. |
