Ringing in the New
It was the best of times, it was the worst of
times, and thank goodness it only happens once a
year. So how was your Christmas then?
I sometimes think that right now,
the beginning of January, is the saddest time of the year. The
Christmas festivities are over, and the gaiety of
New Year too. The Christmas tree still stands
until 12th night in our house, but looks dusty and
sad. The fairy on the top of the tree has lost
her smile and waits patiently to be put back into
the box, back into the attic, unable to wave her
magic wand for another 12 months. There's still
snow outside, but it's dirty and brown and the
Christmas crackers that
didn't get pulled are still under the tree,
feeling sorry for themselves. It's all sad,
Christmas is over for another year. The
television is back to its normal programming
schedule; no more 3 hour classic
movies (a chance to get sentimental over singing
nuns in Austria), giving a reason to eat liqueur
chocolates, crack open walnuts and drink sherry at
2 in the afternoon, while wearing an orange paper
hat.
But, now that this New Year, 1996, has started, I
must stop lamenting times past and start looking
to the future. I won't be making any New Year's
resolutions this year, I never do. Except that I
promise
to be more patient with people, it's my only fault
(that I'm admitting here, anyway!) but as that's
due to the fact that I'm a typical critical,
methodical Virgo then it's not really my fault, I
can't help being what my astrological sign has
made me, now can I?
It's my first day back at work today, and I feel
like I want to go home, to laze in front of the
fire eating chocolates and sleeping till noon.
Holidays are a bad habit to get out of aren't
they? My Christmas was non stop eating and
drinking, eating out with friends, eating in with
friends, having take-a-ways, finishing off the
turkey - well, you get the idea. To stop myself
from vegetating too much in front of the TV, and
stuffing myself with left over pudding, I
exercised the dog a lot which was great fun,
especially as we had lots of snow here in the
north east of England, with record breaking
temperatures of around -
19c. It was such fun, the first chance I'd had of
building snowmen since I was a kid, and having
snow ball fights with anybody who was game enough
to join in.
I'll sign off now, and I would like to wish every
single person who reads this page - yes, that
means YOU, a very happy, healthy, prosperous, and
peaceful new year.
