I was not arguing whether getting caviar, or killing cows, was barbaric or not; That is a judgement call.

What I was questioning was the conclusion that a situation in which raising cattle for meat is extremely expensive would cause its consumption to disappear. Just look at Japan, where beef prices are astronomically high (and where it isn't native to the culture to eat beef). Yet beef is thought of as a delicacy! So I question the original submitter's hypothesis.
