Using deep playlists

Got a huge MP3 collection? Chances are deep (or "hierarchical") playlists will make your life a little easier.

Creating a deep playlist

As of Audion 1.5, your playlist can now contain nested folders, just like the Finder.

For example, you could create a folder called "The Beatles", put a folder inside that called "Rubber Soul", and finally put your Rubber Soul MP3s inside that folder. Just like the Finder, you can click on the disclosure triangle to show/hide the contents of any folder.

To create a new folder in the playlist:
1 Select New Folder from the File menu.
2 Name the folder what you'd like.
3 Drag and drop MP3s or other folders - either from the Finder or from your playlist - inside the newly created folder.

This allows you to easily organize your playlist to suit your needs.

Note: Changing the order of items in the playlist does not affect the physical file's location on your hard disk. The playlists entires merely act as pointers to files on your hard disk.

About the checkboxes

You probably noticed that next to every folder in the playlist is a checkbox. This checkbox determines if that particular folder will be active or not when listening to a playlist.

Let's say that today you don't want to listen to The Beatles. Simply uncheck the checkbox next to your Beatles folder, and that folder (and its contents) will be skipped when the time comes. Easy!

Tip: You can option-click checkboxes to check the select box and automatically uncheck all others.

Automatically organizing your playlist

If you have a flat playlist, and you don't want to go through the trouble of organizing it by hand, Audion may be able to organize it for you. If your MP3s have ID3 tags (look for text in the 'Artist' and 'Title' columns in the playlist), then Audion can automatically create folders and sort your playlist based on the contents of those tags.

    To auto-organize your playlist:
1 Select Organize Playlist from the Playlist menu.
2 Select a sort order sub-menu choice. For example, to create top level folders based on artist tags, containing sub-folders based on album tags, choose "by Artist".
