======================================================== ReadMe File For _Mastering The Net_ Multimedia Tutorials ======================================================== CONTENTS -------- 1. System requirements 2. Running The Tutorials 3. Recommendations for trouble-free operation 4. Troubleshooting audio 5. Troubleshooting other problems SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ------------------- - 486 (100 MHz) or better IBM compatible computer - Windows 95 or Windows 3.1 operating system - Double-speed CD-ROM drive (or better) - Soundblaster 16 soundcard or compatible, and speakers - Patience. (You can't really 'fast forward' through these tutorials, and they have a fairly slow pace!) RUNNING THE TUTORIALS --------------------- There are two ways you can launch the tutorials. Either 1. Insert the CD-ROM, run SETUP.EXE (if it doesn't run automatically), click on the EXTRAS button on the Main Menu, then click on the MTN TUTORIALS button, or 2. Run the tutorials straight from the CD-ROM (If your cd-rom drive is letter 'd' then the tutorials are at d:\mtn\mtn.exe) RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TROUBLE-FREE OPERATION ------------------------------------------ If you want to tutorials to fill your entire monitor, set your display to 640 x 480 pixels. (The tutorials will run properly at higher resolutions - such as 800 x 600 - but they won't fill as much of the screen). If you don't know how to change your display settings, see http://www.guide.net.nz/mtn/display.html Your colour depth must be set to 256 or more colours. (If you're not sure what your current settings are, don't panic - most computers are set to display at least 256 colours). While a tutorial segment is playing, you will not be able to halt the segment, or perform any other actions. You will have to wait until the current segment finishes playing before regaining control of your computer. TROUBLESHOOTING AUDIO --------------------- If the sound quality is not very high, don't panic - it's these tutorials, and not your computer, which is at fault. The voice-overs use 8-bit 22.05 kHz WAV files, which are a little 'hissy'. You should be able to clearly make out what's being said, though. If the sound is so poor that it's hard to understand, there may be a problem with your computer's configuration - see the following paragraph. If you can't hear any sound from your speakers, then the problem is probably with your computer's configuration, and not with this program. Try running one of the audio applications which came with your soundcard (such as Media Player, if you're running Windows 95), and attempt to get sound coming from your speakers. TROUBLESHOOTING OTHER PROBLEMS ------------------------------ Although these tutorials have been prepared on the Windows 3.1 version of Formula Graphics, some display problems have been detected when running the program on Windows 3.1. If the opening screen contains only the Title Bar and the Quit button (but none of the text links), then you might try changing your display setting to only 16 colours. (All the images will look terrible, but at least the text will be readable!) You can change your display settings from 'Windows Setup' in the Main Program Group) If you're running Windows 95, and these multimedia tutorials begin behaving unpredictably, I recommend that you restart your computer, and run the tutorials again, WITHOUT ANY OTHER PROGRAMS RUNNING ON YOUR COMPUTER. (This may help to solve problems arising from conflicts for system resources). Further troubleshooting tips (and a bug report form) can be found by clicking on the button labelled 'CD-ROM' on the MTN Web site, at http://www.guide.net.nz/
