Whole-body irradiation - bibliography I. Perentesis, Patricia J. II. National Library of Medicine (U.S.). Reference Section III. Title IV. Series 02NLM: ZW 1 N272 no.95-5 SERIES NOTE Current Bibliographies in Medicine (CBM) is a continuation in part of the National Library of Medicine's Literature Search Series, which ceased in 1987 with No. 87-15. In 1989 it also subsumed the Specialized Bibliography Series. Each bibliography in the new series covers a distinct subject area of biomedicine and is usually intended to fulfill a current awareness function. Citations are usually derived from searching a variety of online databases. NLM databases utilized include MEDLINE, AVLINE, BIOETHICSLINE, CANCERLIT, CATLINE, HEALTH, POPLINE and TOXLINE. The only criterion for the inclusion of a particular published work is its relevance to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the material is not considered. Comments and suggestions on this series may be addressed to: Karen Patrias, Editor Current Bibliographies in Medicine Reference Section National Library of Medicine Bethesda, MD 20894 Phone: 301-496-6097 Fax: 301-402-1384 Internet: patrias@nlm.nih.gov Ordering Information: Current Bibliographies in Medicine is sold by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, P.O. 371954, Pittsburgh, PA 15250-7954. To order the entire CBM series for calendar year 1995 (approximately 10 bibliographies), send $47.00 ($58.75 foreign) to the Superintendent of Documents citing GPO List ID: CBM95. For your convenience an order blank is given inside the back cover. Orders for individual bibliographies in the series ($4.75, $5.94 foreign) should be sent to the Superintendent of Documents citing the title, CBM number, and the GPO List ID given above. Internet Access: The Current Bibliographies in Medicine series is also available at no cost to anyone with Internet access through FTP (File Transfer Protocol). FTP to nlmpubs.nlm.nih.gov and login as anonymous. The index file in the "bibs" directory provides information on the bibliographies available. Use of funds for printing this periodical has been approved by the Director of the Office of Management and Budget through September 30, 1995. WHOLE-BODY IRRADIATION A literature search was performed to identify all English language publications from 1944 - 1974 possibly involving whole-body irradiation. A review of this literature was then made by the Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments and experiments were categorized into human, animal, instrumentation, and theory. All of the publications which involved whole-body irradiation of humans, reports of accidents and therapy as well as experiments, were then compiled into this bibliography. By executive order on January 18, 1994 the Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments was established by President William J. Clinton. The function of this committee as decreed by the order was to provide the established Human Radiation Interagency Working Group with advice and recommendations on the ethical and scientific standards applicable to human radiation experiments carried out or sponsored by the United States Government. As stated by the order, human radiation experiments means: 1. Experiments on individuals involving intentional exposure to ionizing radiation. This category does not include common and routine clinical practices, such as established diagnosis and treatment methods involving incidental exposures to ionizing radiation. 2. Experiments involving intentional environmental releases of radiation that (a) were designed to test human health effects of ionizing radiation; or (b) were designed to test the extent of human exposure to ionizing radiation. The Advisory Committee would like to thank the staff of the Public Services Division of the National Library of Medicine who assisted with this compilation. SEARCH STRATEGY This bibliography was prepared for a retrospective look at the field of human radiation experiments covering the years 1944 - 1974. The literature for the period of 1944 - 1965 was obtained by manually reviewing the subject indexes of volumes of Cumulated Index Medicus, Quarterly Cumulative Index Medicus, and Current List of Medical Literature. Amongst the terms searched for this bibliography were any terms beginning with radiation, radioactivity, radionuclide, radiotherapy, radium, or roentgen; also searched were radiography, radioautography, cesium, cesium isotopes, cobalt, or cobalt isotopes. Articles in English possibly dealing with this subject and not specific to animal studies were marked for review by staff of the Advisory Committee. For the period of 1966 - 1974, the backfiles of MEDLINE were searched using a text-word strategy and limiting the results to human and English language. Words searched included whole or total or entire with body and all irradiat: or all radiat:, or the acronym tbi. The bibliography produced by this strategy was then reviewed by staff of the Advisory Committee. For more current literature on this topic, the MeSH term Whole Body Irradiation was used from 1982-1990, and since 1991 the term has been Whole-Body Irradiation. If searching online, Whole-Body Irradiation should be used to search from 1982 to the present. GRATEFUL MED To make online searching easier and more efficient, the Library offers GRATEFUL MED, microcomputer-based software that provides a user-friendly interface to most NLM databases. This software was specifically developed for health professionals and features multiple choice menus and "fill in the blank" screens for easy search preparation. GRATEFUL MED runs on an IBM PC (or IBM-compatible) with DOS 2.0 or a Macintosh, and requires a Hayes (or Hayes-compatible) modem. It may be purchased from the National Technical Information Service in Springfield, Virginia, for $29.95 (plus $3.00 per order for shipping). For your convenience, an order blank has been enclosed at the back of this bibliography.
