Data supporting the Oregon Breeding Bird Atlas
Various data sets are included on this CD. The files may be viewed and queried by importing them into a standard spreadsheet or database program, such as Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access, or even by viewing and sorting them in Microsoft Word.
All the files reside within the Data folder on the CD. The files are of several types: text (TXT extension), data base (DBF extension), spreadsheet (XLS extension), and Word document (DOC extension). A few of the data sets are provided in both TXT and DBF format.
You may view a file by opening it from within your program (such as Word, Excel, or your statistical or database program). From the program's open or import menu option, you can navigate to the Atlas CD and open the Data folder. If the names don't appear in the list, be sure you select all file types.
You may locate the files from your operating system by navigating to the CD icon and opening the Data folder. (on Windows click on the Start button, then Windows Explorer and locate the CD labeled Atlas (frequently the D: drive) and double-click on the Data folder.)
The text files (TXT) are comma delimited. When you open them in a database program, you will need to provide column headings.
Although we have made the data from this project accessible to anyone, all the time the authors spent administering this project, as well as time spent computerizing, organizing, and documenting the data, was uncompensated. Moreover, not every limitation of the data has been described. For these reasons, we request that researchers who wish to publish statistical analyses of these data please contact us first to discuss the data and opportunities for joint authorship of resulting publications. Furthermore, we again thank the Oregon Natural Heritage Program and the USEPA for sharing with us some of the non-avian data sets included here. We also would appreciate hearing of any factual errors discovered in the MASTER.TXT file.
