═══ 1. What is USENET news ═══ The term "news" applies to the USENET in only the most general sense. For the most part, what we see on USENET newsgroups does not correspond with the average person's definition of "news". The USENET is not a collection of electronic newspapers. While there are some newsgroups which come close to this definition, they are far from being the majority of the USENET. There is little that USENET news is not. One can find facts and opinions on almost any subject. USENET news is whatever you, the user, make of it. After all, it is the USERS NETWORK. ═══ 2. NewsReader/2 ═══ NewsReader/2 was created by Ryan Rogers and Oleg Vishnepolsky. ═══ 3. IBM Trademark ═══ Trademark of the IBM Corporation. ═══ 4. NewsReader/2 Introduction ═══ NewsReader/2 is an OS/2* application which gives you access to various USENET newsgroups. You can subscribe to different newsgroups, read news, and make posts. NewsReader/2 is a client application. It needs an NNTP-based news server somewhere on the network to get the news from. Ask your network administrator about the IP address and/or machine name of the news server nearest you. ═══ 5. USENET Introduction ═══ Welcome to the world of USENET news! The USENET is a vast and often complex land, so if you are new to it, you should take the time to review all the material put forth below: o What is the USENET? o What is USENET news? o What is a newsgroup? o What is a post? ═══ 6. Starting NewsReader/2 ═══ NewsReader/2 Syntax Diagram: >>──NR2──┬────────────────┬──────>< ├─server─┬─────┬─┤ │ ├─/NC─┤ │ │ └─/U──┘ │ ├─/S─┬─────┬─────┤ │ └─/NC─┘ │ ├─/NC────────────┤ │ │ └─/?─────────────┘ Where: Option: Description: server This parameter specifies the news server which NewsReader/2 will connect to and can be in the form of an IP address or machine name. It will override the NEWSSERVER environment variable, as well as any information stored in NR2.INI or NR2.CTL (LAN control file). However, NR2.INI will not be updated by this option. Use the /S option for that. /NC Starts up in "no connection" mode. While in this mode you can import the NEWS.GRP file to be used from an AIX* based NEWSRC news reader file. /S Forces NewsReader/2 not to use the default news server. A dialog will be given for you to enter the news server, and this information will be saved in NR2.INI for future sessions. /U Runs NewsReader/2 in the batch process NEWS.ALL building mode. This can be used to have the application rebuild the NEWS.ALL from the command-line. The GUI interface will not appear, and you will not be prompted for any action unless the syntax of the command is incorrect. If an error occurs during processing, it will be logged in ~ETC\NR2BATCH.ERR. /? Displays a nifty informational panel which provides a brief description of NewsReader/2, as well as the same syntax information given in this help panel. ═══ 7. Basic Windows ═══ The following is a list of NewsReader/2's basic windows, accompanied by a brief description. For more information on each window and its functions, double-click on its name in the list. Window: Brief Description: SUBSCRIPTIONS A list of all the USENET newsgroups to which you are subscribed. This window is always open. HEADERS A list of article headers for the current USENET newsgroup. This window is always open. ARTICLE Displays the text of a USENET article. This window is opened by double-clicking on an article header in the HEADERS window. ALL GROUPS Contains the list of all USENET groups on the news server. This window is not created by by NewsReader/2 at start-up. It can be opened by choosing the Actions->All Groups menu item in the SUBSCRIPTIONS window. NEW GROUPS This window appears at start-up if NewsReader/2 learns that new groups have been created on the news server since the last session. The window contains a list of all of these groups. You can disable the use of the NEW GROUPS window with the Options->Application Options dialog. ═══ 8. Directory Structure ═══ The first time you start NewsReader/2 on your system, it will establish its directory structure in your local ETC directory (this is where most of the related files are kept). The following is a list of the directories which are created and their contents: Directory: Contents: ~ETC\RNSPOOL All temporary (.TMP) and deferred posting (.SAV) files are kept in this directory. Files for posting, mailing, and replying are POSTx.TMP, MAILy.TMP, and REPLYz.TMP, respectively. Numbers x, y, and z start at 1 for each session and increment as you perform each task. File ARTICLE.TXT is also created whenever you manipulate an article. All *.TMP files in this directory, as well as ARTICLE.TXT, are deleted at the start of each session. ~ETC\KILL All killfiles are kept in this directory. The killfile for all groups is easily recognizable as ALLGROUP.KIL, however; the killfiles for each individual newsgroup are named using a numeric encryption. ~ETC\SIG The directory holds the signature files available for use by NewsReader/2. Only files ending with .SIG will be recognized for use by the Configure->Signature... dialog. ~ETC\LOG This is where the NR2POST.LOG and NR2MAIL.LOG files are kept (if these log file options are being used). This directory can be used to hold any other log files which you wish to create using the File->Save As... dialog in the ARTICLE window. ═══ 9. Related Files ═══ The following is a list of the related files and their contents (all of these are created and maintained automatically by NewsReader/2 in your local ETC directory). File: Contents: NEWS.GRP This file keeps track of your subscriptions and seen articles. Each line in the file contains a newsgroup name followed by a list of seen article number ranges. NEWS.SAV This file is a backup of your NEWS.GRP file from the last session. If for some reason your NEWS.GRP file becomes lost or garbled, you can retrieve the lost information from this file. NewsReader/2 will automatically use the NEWS.SAV file if it is unable to find and/or use the NEWS.GRP file. NEWS.ALL This binary file contains all USENET groups which are known to your news server, and whether or not each can be posted to. This file is always required for adding newsgroups, and is required by default for making posts. NEWS.TIM This file contains the time stamp of the last time you started NewsReader/2. If you are using the Inform of new groups option in the Options->Application Options... dialog, then the time stamp is used when the server is queried for new groups. The format of the time stamp, in GMT, is: YYMMDD HHMMSS NR2.INI This file is used to store all of the application's information from session to session. NR2BATCH.ERR This file is used to log any errors encountered while running the application in the batch process NEWS.ALL building mode (the /U startup option). NR2.CTL This is a LAN control file which can be used to specify the name or IP address of the news server NewsReader/2 should use. The file must be placed somewhere on the LAN so that it can be found in the DPATH of each workstation. The file should consist of a single line: NEWSSERVER= ═══ 10. Reading News ═══ Initially you have to subscribe to a few newsgroups. The easiest way to do this is to use Actions->All Groups in the SUBSCRIPTIONS window to build a NEWS.ALL file. When the build is finished the ALL GROUPS window will appear. You can then search the window for newsgroups you are interested in. Click on those which you wish to subscribe to, and then select Actions->Add Group(s) from this window. The first non-empty group added to your SUBSCRIPTIONS window will automatically be opened into the HEADERS window. You can open other newsgroups as they are added by double-clicking on them. When a group is open, its article headers appear in the HEADERS window. To view an article, just double-click on its corresponding header. You can follow all of the appends of a certain subject by highlighting a header with the desired subject and selecting Actions->Same Headers in the HEADERS window. This will list the original post (if it exists) and all replies in the current sorted order. To get back to the original header list for that group, just select Actions->All Headers once or press Esc. NewsReader/2 loads only new articles - those you have not seen before. You can obtain the list of all the headers available on the server (including those that you have seen before) by selecting Actions->All Headers in the HEADERS window. If you have read the entire group and NewsReader/2 does not have any loaded headers for it, double-clicking on the group name in the SUBSCRIPTIONS window will retreive all of the old headers. ═══ 11. Manipulating Articles ═══ There are numerous ways you can manipulate a post in the ARTICLE window. You can copy part or all of it to the OS/2* clipboard, print the article, save it to disk, and save it to a LaMail folder. In addition, you can drag and drop the article from the title bar icon for the ARTICLE window. Note: You should not use drag and drop to permanently save NewsReader/2 articles. The file which is dropped, ARTICLE.TXT, is constantly changing as you save and print articles, and is deleted each time the application starts. To copy to the clipboard: 1. Select the text you want to copy. Do this with the mouse or with Edit->Select->Select all. 2. Select Edit->Copy (Ctrl+Insert) to copy the text. 3. Unselect the text. Do this with the mouse or Edit->Select->Deselect all. To print the article, do one of the following: o Select File->Print to print to the established default printer. You will be asked to select a default if one has not been established. o Drag the file icon on the title bar button and drop it on any printer object on the desktop. To save the article, do one of the following: o Select File->Save to append to USEFUL.NEW in your ~\ETC\LOG directory. o Select File->Save As... to save or append to any file on your systems accessible storage devices. To save to a LaMail folder: 1. Select File->Save To LaMail Folder... 2. Select a folder from the drop-down list box. 3. Select OK. ═══ 12. Posting ═══ Posting is accomplished by selecting either Post... from either the SUBSCRIPTIONS or HEADERS windows or Follow-up Post... from the ARTICLE window. Post... will allow you to create a new post, while Follow-up Post... will let you reply to the current article. The editor which you have established in the Configure->Editor... dialog will be used for your post creation. By default, NewsReader/2 checks the postability of a newsgroup before you create the post. This is accomplished by looking in the NEWS.ALL file. As a result, this file must exist for you to post. You can build this file using Actions->All Groups in the SUBSCRIPTIONS window. When you are creating a new post from SUBSCRIPTIONS or HEADERS, you will be presented with a Post... dialog. You can enter additional newsgroups for the post to be shown on, as well as a subject, summary, keywords, and distribution. After you finish with this dialog, the custom editor will appear for you to compose your post. It will already contain the header fields which you entered into the previous dialog. When replying to a post in the ARTICLE window, the custom editor is presented automatically. It will contain the correct headers for you to post with, as well as the text from the article you are following-up to. The text is indented with a '>' character so that readers of your post will be able to distinguish just what text is yours. When you are done composing your post, just save the file and NewsReader/2 will ask you if you wish to send it to the news server. You can either send the post at that time, defer the posting until later, or return to the editor to finish the post. Deferring the post is a useful function because it allows you to send multiple posts to the server at a later time, and does not interfere with your news reading. You may remove one of your posts from the news server by selecting Cancel from the ARTICLE window. The cancel will be forwarded by the news server to other servers, however; there is no guarantee that the other servers will acknowledge the cancel. You may cancel your news only. ═══ 13. Refreshing ═══ NewsReader/2 has the capability to refresh its subscriptions. You can manually refresh the newsgroups from either SUBSCRIPTIONS or HEADERS. You refresh the current newsgroup with Actions->Refresh Group->Current. To refresh all subscriptions, use Actions->Refresh Groups->All. In addition, NewsReader/2 can also refresh itself. By default, this auto-refresh occurs once an hour. Using Configure->Refreshing..., you can change or disable the auto-refresh and establish refresh options. These options consist of removing seen headers, checking for and removing cancelled headers, and auto-refreshing only when communication with the server has been idle. ═══ 14. Using Killfiles ═══ NewsReader/2 supports the use of killfiles for each newsgroup, and one killfile for all groups (ALLGROUP.KIL). These files are kept in the KILL subdirectory of the local ETC directory. With these files you can kill articles by subject and by author. Note: An entry made to a killfile will only affect headers to be loaded in the future. Any headers which are already loaded can not be killed by updating killfiles. By default, when an article is killed, its header is skipped when loading and you never see it. However, there is an option in the Options->Application Options... dialog which allows the killed article headers to be marked as seen instead of being removed altogether. Killfiles can be edited using items in the Actions->Edit Killfile submenu in the SUBSCRIPTIONS window. However, when editing a killfile, information should only be deleted, never added. If you wish to add information, you should use menu items from the Actions->Kill subject and Actions->Kill author submenus in the HEADERS and ARTICLE windows. Killfiles have a maximum size limit of 64K. Although the files can be larger than this, the excess data will be disregarded. However, you are encouraged to keep small killfiles, especially for the killfile for all groups (ALLGROUP.KIL). Since this file is used for each group when loading and refreshing, a large file will dramatically increase the load time. ═══ 15. Using Sigfiles ═══ NewsReader/2 supports the use of signature files, or sigfiles for short. Sigfiles are used to keep a custom text signature of your own creation which is automatically appended to posts, replies, and mail sent by NewsReader/2. Signature file support not only makes you a more efficient news reader by saving you the time of signing every post you make, but it also provides you with the opportunity to be creative. Note: Do not be too creative! Sigfiles should not exceed four or five lines in length. NewsReader/2 will support any length sigfile, but large sigfiles will waste the disk space of the USENET All sigfiles (which are kept in ~ETC\SIG) can be created, edited, and selected for use using the Configure->Signature... dialog. See this dialog for further information. ═══ 16. Changing News Servers ═══ Each news server has its own idea of what the article numbers are. So, if you switch from one server to another, NewsReader/2 will get confused as to what articles have been seen and what have not. You have to either erase the NEWS.GRP file in the local ETC directory and start again, or edit it and remove the article number information, leaving only the newsgroup names. ═══ 17. Definitions ═══ NewsReader/2's help defines the following: o Drag and drop o News o Newsgroup o Post o USENET ═══ 18. What is Drag and drop ═══ Drag and drop refers to an OS/2* desktop procedure where you drag an icon from one point on the desktop and drop it at another, usually onto a window or icon. This an intuitive yet powerful method of transferring information. NewsReader/2 supports drag and drop of the file icon on the ARTICLE title bar button. You can drop this icon onto printer objects, disk drive objects, folders, etc, to copy the article. The method is simple: 1. Press and hold the right mouse button onto the ARTICLE title bar button. 2. Without releasing the right mouse button, move the mouse to place the file icon over a window or desktop object. 3. Release the right mouse button. Not all windows or objects can be dropped onto. A black circle with a horizontal white bar indicates that the window or object will not use the dropped item. Additionally, some objects will allow NewsReader/2 to drop onto them, but will not use the article because it is not a recognizable format to the application. Here is a short and incomplete list of applications and desktop objects which will recognize NewsReader/2's articles: o Enhanced Editor (EPM) o Disk drive objects o Printer objects o Folder objects Note: You should not use drag and drop to permanently save NewsReader/2 articles. The file which is dropped, ARTICLE.TXT, is constantly changing as you save and print articles, and is deleted each time the application starts. ═══ 19. What is USENET? ═══ The USENET (USERS NETWORK) is a logical network that provides access to a centralized data base of world-wide news. Logically, this network deals with articles and newsgroups. The physical communication is handled by the Arpanet and other lower-level networks. Because these networks use the client-server method and central storage, you can access large amounts of information quickly and with minimal workstation resources. The news servers that make up the USENET communicate with each other using numerous methods, the most common being the UNIX-to-UNIX COPY (UUCP) protocol. NewsReader/2 communicates with a news server using the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) to provide access to the centralized news data base. ═══ 20. What is a newsgroup? ═══ At the simplest level, a newsgroup (or "group" for short) is a collection of articles in the USENET which fall under a certain topic. For example, there are newsgroups about baking, computing, law, startrek, and so forth. A newsgroup may or may not be moderated. There are several major hierarchies of newsgroups on the USENET. Each hierarchy deals with a general area of concentration: alt Alternate newsgroups covering anything and everything. Flame-wars are common, and useful information is rare. biz Newsgroups with business related topics. comp Topics convering many aspects of computing such as computer programming, operating systems, hardware, etc. misc Miscellaneous topics which do not fall under any other hierarchy. news Topics dealing with USENET networking and maintenance. rec Groups covering numerous types of recreation, hobbies, and interests. sci Scientific groups, dealing with both research and application. soc "Socializing" newsgroups. Many different world cultures are represented. talk Discussion newsgroups which host heated debates on various topics. ═══ 21. What is a post? ═══ The terms "post", "article", and "append" are all synonymous. They all refer to the smallest informational package on the USENET. They are quite similar to electronic mail in their structure, but the audience is very much different. You usually send email to a limited number of individuals, but posts to the USENET usually have the whole world as their audience. Literally thousands may read what you post to the USENET. To better understand just what a post is and to understand its basic structure, let's take a look at an example: Xref: yktnews.watson.ibm.com ibm.watson.test:73 ibm.test:60 Newsgroups: ibm.watson.test,ibm.test Path: yktnews.watson.ibm.com!news From: rrogers@danzig.watson.ibm.com (Ryan Rogers) Subject: Testing NewsReader/2 for OS/2! Summary: A short little test Sender: news@yktnews.watson.ibm.com (NNTP News Poster) Message-ID: Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1993 05:53:40 GMT Expires: 08/04/93 Distribution: watson Lines: 6 Reply-To: rrogers@danzig.watson.ibm.com (Ryan Rogers) Disclaimer: The poster's views follow, not necessarily IBM's. Reading USENET news is fun! -- Regards, Ryan Rogers Most of these headers are removed by NewsReader/2 by default so that you do not have to see the network gibberish. Note: Not all news servers are configured the same. Some servers may not use all of the above headers, while others may allow more. Also, the ordering of the headers after Xref: is insignificant. ═══ 22. Xref: header ═══ The Xref: header contains a list of the newsgroups which also have the same post (a cross-reference list). By using this information, news reading software can prevent you from viewing the same article twice. ═══ 23. Newsgroups: header ═══ The Newsgroups: header contains the name(s) of the newsgroup(s) to which the article was posted. ═══ 24. Path: header ═══ The Path: header contains the path of machine names over which the post travelled before finally arriving at your news server. ═══ 25. From: header ═══ The From: header contains the email address of the user who created the post. ═══ 26. Subject: header ═══ The Subject: header contains the title of the post. The subject should be short yet informative. ═══ 27. Summary: header ═══ The Summary: header contains a brief summary of post's contents. ═══ 28. Sender: header ═══ The Sender: header contains the name or IP address of the news machine which posted the article to the USENET. ═══ 29. Message-ID: header ═══ The Message-ID: header contains the unique message identification code for that post. Every post on the news server has a unique message-ID. ═══ 30. Date: header ═══ The Date: header contains the date of when the news server first received the post. ═══ 31. Expires: header ═══ The Expires: header contains a date indicating when the news server will drop the post. ═══ 32. Distribution: header ═══ The Distribution: header dictates how far across the USENET the post was sent. Using this field does not guarantee that distribution of the post will be adhered to as desired. ═══ 33. Lines: header ═══ The Lines: header contains the number of lines in the body of the post. ═══ 34. Reply-To: header ═══ The Reply-To: header contains the email address which the author of the post wants people to use when emailing a response. ═══ 35. Disclaimer: header ═══ The Disclaimer: header contains a standard legal disclaimer which may be added by some news servers if you do not specify one. ═══ 36. Nntp-Posting-Host: header ═══ The Nntp-Posting-Host: header contains the name or IP address of the workstation from which the post originated. ═══ 37. Organization: header ═══ The Organization: header contains the organization to which the author of the post belongs. ═══ 38. X-Newsreader: header ═══ The X-Newsreader: header contains the name and version of the news reader software used to create the post. ═══ 39. Followup-To: header ═══ The Followup-To: header contains the names of the newsgroup(s) to post to when doing a follow-up post. Using such a field will force users who reply to your articles to follow-up to the group(s) you specify. ═══ 40. Keywords: header ═══ The Keywords: header contains any relevant keywords which the poster may have included with this post. ═══ 41. No matter what method you use to save the file, the directory and filename will be remembered and preloaded into the dialog for future saves. You may exit the Save As... window at any time by selecting Cancel. ═══ 193. Help for Directories List Box ═══ The Directories list box contains entries for all drives known to your system and all the directories which are accessible from your current directory. You can change your current drive by selecting the letter of the desired drive. To advance to a deeper directory, simply select its name. To back out of the current directory (if you are not already at the root), select '..'. You select an item from the list by either double-clicking on it with the left mouse button or by highlighting it and pressing the Enter key. ═══ 194. If you wish, you may enter arguments for the editor's invocation. Also, there is an auto-close option which will automatically close the editor upon task completion. Note: Make sure you enter an executable filename with either a .EXE or .COM extension. You will need to supply a drive and/or full path if the filename is not in your PATH statement. The auto-close option is recommended, however; if you will be using a PM or WPS based editor, you may be limited to running only one session at a time if this option is used. The Enhanced Editor (EPM) is also highly recommended. If you want to use EPM, be sure to enter %/M into the Arguments: field. ═══ 199. Enter the subject title for your post into the Subject: field. The remaining optional entry fields can be used to establish a Distribution: for the post, as well as Summary: and Keywords: header information. When the dialog appears, the Newsgroups: entry field already has the currently loaded newsgroup in it. You can add more by adding a comma and/or space and then the newsgroup. In addition, if you specify a default distribution in the Posting... options dialog, then it will appear in the Distribution: field. Once you have completed the entry fields, select the OK button. This dialog pops up when NewsReader/2 needs this information in order to carry out a specified task. The first of four entry fields is used for entering your From: field. This email address is used by NewsReader/2 whenever it deals with your posts and when forwarding articles. The second entry field is used for entering your Reply-To: field, if you wish it to be different than your From: field. When making a post, NewsReader/2 enters a Reply-To: line into the header information. The email address in this field is used by news reader applications when generating email replies to articles (like NewsReader/2's Reply To... function). The third entry field is used for entering your optional Organization: field. You can provide a concise description of the organization you belong to. For example, if you are at New York University Courant Institute you might enter: Courant Institute, New York University. If you work for Joe Blow Inc's company in the state of New York, you might enter: Joe Blow Inc, NY, USA. Note that this field is optional and your server may assign a default Organization: field if you do not provide yours. The fourth field is used for entering a default Distribution: for your posts. When you create a new post, the default Distribution: will be what you enter in this field. The Distribution: field dictates just how far your post will progress on the USENET. If the server you enter is connected to, it will be saved in NR2.INI and you will never need to specify a news server again. If you want to start NewsReader/2 just to see the interface (you do not want to connect to a news server), then just enter a bogus server name and hit OK. For this to work, you must have specified the /NC command-line parameter, or NewsReader/2 will abort when it tries to connect to the bogus server. To perform a search, first enter a string into the entry field. Then select the search options which you wish to use and a search domain (headers only, body only, or both). Hit Search to start the search. Once the search begins, the headers of the articles which are found will appear in the list box, followed by the line from the article which contains the search string. Also, the Search button will change to Stop, which can be used to stop the search. After a search is stopped, the button changes back to Search, and you can use this to restart the search from where it left off at. To load an article which is found in the search, you have to wait for the search to end or use the Stop button. Then double-click on the article's header, or the line of text from the article, to load it. You can use the Clear button to remove the found articles from the list box. This can be done when the search is complete (it ends by itself) or after you use the Stop button. Using it after Stop will make the next search start from the beginning of the newsgroup instead of where it left off at. When you are done with the dialog, select Cancel to close it. ═══ 322. Help for Result: List Box ═══ The headers of the articles which are found in the search appear in this list box. Help for No Button ═══ Selecting the No button will return you to the editor to finish the post. ═══ 337. Help for Defer Button ═══ Selecting the Defer button will tell NewsReader/2 that you are done composing the append, but want to send it to the server later. This is useful because it keeps the TCP/IP socket open for reading more news. You can then send all deferred posts to the news server later when you are done reading and replying to articles. To do this, select Send Deferred Posts from them main Actions pull-down.
