Dream Home Design - Case Study3
Company: J.S. Building Consultancy

Featured in Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine - Dream Home Challenge series.

In order to provide interest, the extension to the rear is octagonal yet blends in with the traditional cottage to provide an eco friendly home for the 21st century.

The new area to the east and the extension are constructed using straw bales, with lime mortar rendering to match that of the existing building. The roof is clad in slate and the windows are timber with the exception of the Velux rooflights.

By removing the existing eastern gable wall, the inside will be opened up providing more space and removing any difficulty in getting water to and from the bathroom. The rear door is replaced with a full height window to give plenty of light to the main living area. The rooflights provide light to the bathroom and stairs, positioned to the rear so as not to destroy the buildings character.

The living room has a stone hearth on which logs can be stacked to the sides. This end of the living room extends up to the full height of the roof with the exposed timber rafters and purlins left open. The utility has ample space for storage, muddy boots etc. The large kitchen extends into the open plan dining area.
