The History Of Tile Making by Swallow Tiles (Cranleigh_ Ltd
Company: Swallows Tiles (Cranleigh) Ltd

For almost one and a half centuries Swallow's Tiles have been producing genuine hand made clay roof tiles on their 70 acre site on the Surrey/West Sussex borders. This area is renowned for the quality of the rich clay deposits and is accepted as the heart of the brick and tile industry in the South of England. Clay tile production in Britain can be traced back to Roman times and indeed remains of this evidence has been discovered very close to the Swallow's Tiles works.

Originally, Swallow's Tiles were established to manufacture facing bricks and drainage pipes but now concentrate solely on producing a full range of traditional tiles and fittings. Generations of craftsmen have been employed by Swallow's Tiles, making many millions of roof tiles which have been used on a very wide range of buildings. Local craft techniques have been passed from father to son, presently third and fourth generations of skilled tilemakers are still employed by the company.
