Our standard hardwood flooring is 19mm thick. If we are starting from a concrete floor we must install a timber base of battens or chipboard to which we fix the new hardwood flooring. This raises the floor a total of 37mm, this is not usually a problem. We have, however, found some situations where the extra height would cause difficulties and yet the customer really wants a solid hardwood floor rather than a factory produced product.
To meet this need we have developed an overlay system. We machine the hardwood to 9mm thick boards and using special adhesives we pin and bond these to a plywood base. The total thickness of this system on a concrete base is 18mm not much thicker than a carpet and underlay. The boards are then sanded and finished on site in the same way as our standard flooring.
This system can also be used when there is an existing timber base and in this situation offers a cost effective way of achieving a solid hardwood floor.
