Unvented cylinder supplier Oso Hotwater (UK) Ltd is currently celebrating its tenth anniversary. The Norwegian based manufacturers venture into the UK market has been an unparalleled success with sales and market share significantly growing year on year. The UK is now the most important export market for this long established company. Osos core products are direct and indirect unvented cylinders with capacities of 100, 125, 170, 210, 250 & 330 litres and guaranteed for 25 years.

Over the past decade Oso have been one of the driving forces behind the trend away from traditional low-pressure gravity fed systems to mains pressure unvented cylinders. Unvented cylinders are connected directly to the incoming water main and do not require feed tanks. As well as producing very powerful showers and high flow rates, the system reduces design constraints by ensuring a dry roof spaces and far greater flexibility in positioning of the cylinder. It is now widely recognised by housebuilders and heating engineers alike that the unvented method offers pressure, flow rate and flexibility of cylinder location unavailable on any other system.

The unvented system is still relatively new in the UK. Domestic systems were introduced in the late 1980s to a sceptical industry, but after a slow start, industry sales have risen rapidly over the past five years and mains pressure unvented cylinders have become the product of choice for the majority of UK housebuilders.

Unvented systems have been dominant in continental Europe for many decades now, and Oso have been able to make the most of half a centurys experience in the manufacture of unvented cylinders. Oso dipped their toe into the UK market in 1989 with the first stainless steel domestic cylinder available to British consumers, and following the creation of Oso Hotwater (UK) Ltd in 1994, the company has continued at the forefront of innovation.

The manufacturing arm of OSO (UK) produced its first stainless steel cylinder in 1970 and over 2 million OSO stainless steel cylinders are now in operation worldwide.   The production plant is one of the most advanced in Europe and produces over 80,000 water heaters per year, welding 3,000 metres of stainless steel during each production day. This ensures that the cylinders can be produced at very competitive prices, without sacrificing the standards of build-quality for which the company is renowned.

With the nations and governments eye on energy efficiency, the requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations, introduced in 2002 and set to be tightened in 2005, have cast a net wider than just boiler manufacturers. Hot water storage cylinders now have to satisfy stringent levels of insulation and heat exchanger efficiency. Oso cylinders conform to CheSS best practice and exceed both the current and proposed Part L efficiency levels. Oso have some of the largest heat exchangers available, with a 26.5kw heating coil fitted to the 170-litre cylinder and above.

The Oso range has broadened over time to include ClearSkies approved twin coil cylinders designed for use with solar panels or ground source heat pumps, Dualstream accumulator units that boost a poor incoming flow rate, and cylinders supplied with 28mm fittings and connections instead of the standard 22mm.

For commercial water heating Oso offer mini vessels from 5 litres up to industrial calorifiers of 10,000 litres.

From a standing start ten years ago, Oso have become one of the principle suppliers in the rapidly growing unvented cylinder industry. The company has full national representation and concentrates exclusively on mains pressure products. The products are widely available from builders and plumbers merchants.
