Styro Stones consist of an EPS formwork with integral plastic bridges (ties), which are an important feature as they ensure superior acoustic and fire properties (90 minute fire rating) compared to conventional polystyrene bridges. They ensure the smooth passage and flow of concrete, preventing the build up of air pockets to give improved compaction and a more even distribution of concrete, particularly to areas beside lintels or similar obstructions.
For basements, the narrow ties (2.5mm) easily accommodate steel work and do not permit the passage of water, unlike polystyrene bridges. Basement walls should be treated with a solvent free bitumen coating or a waterproof membrane in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
