Kyoto ningyo (dolls) Artist: Kyoto doll maker Shisui Sekihara

I believe that I have been given life so that I can make dolls. This is because I have never played with any toy other than dolls, since I was a child. When I was just a toddler, at about age three, I loved going with my mother to watch Kabuki or traditional dancing. I can still partially recall the lovely stages and costumes I saw at age four or five. I wanted so much to make dolls of the beautiful performers I saw on stage that starting at about age seven, I began to make dolls from colored and patterned paper.
I recall vividly, even now that I've lived more than 75 years, that is was sickness and the ravages of war that brought me to Kyoto. In Kyoto, I came in contact with traditional culture and arts, which ultimately enabled me to make the kinds of dolls that I wanted to make. I create my dolls with the intention that they inspire emotion and bring joy to all the people of the world.
