Portland State University (Portland, Oregon USA) is offering two kabuki workshops taught by James Brandon as part of the July 22 to August 15 Portland International Performance Institute. They are:

THE APPEAL OF KABUKI

August 5-August 8, Mon-Thurs. 1-3:30 PM

Introduction to Japanese Kabuki Theatre, stressing its various features: exoticism, story and character, as an "actors' theatre," and illustration of performance techniques through reading and video showing.

Taught by James Brandon, distinguished Japanese theater scholar and visiting professor from the university of Hawaii. One or Zero credits; Japanese/Theater Arts 399 or 199.

WORKSHOP IN KABUKI THEATER

August 9-August 10, Fri. 10 AM-3:50 PM & Sat. 12-5:50 PM

Hands-on experience in four aspects of Kabuki theatre performance: staging, acting style, movement of the body, and speech techniques.

Taught by James Brandon. One or Zero credits; Japanese/Theater Arts 399 or 199.
