Fumio Nanjo, Chairman of the Judges' Panel

This open award is the first art award in the world which regards the Internet as a medium, and despite the short registration period, the fact that approximately 260 people of various ages and positions participated from many different countries and regions of the world, indicates that this has been a great success. However, because there was a time limit for the registration, there were not enough new works and art works which carried the suitable concept for the theme of "Millenium". Also, we could not decide for an outstanding single work, and eventually, after consideration by all the judges, we decided not to have any winner of the grand prize.
As a result of this, besides the five winners of each discipline (receiving a prize money of$10,000), we have decided to allocate$5,000 each to ten good works, out of the grand prize money.

Aside from the winners, there were many interesting works which had an aspect of entertainment and unexpectedness, as well as an interactive character. We feel that this has resulted in creating a stir as a new attempt in the utilization of the Internet. Making use of this opportunity, in the future, we hope that the understanding towards the Internet will deepen, and that a new history of art will be opened to us.
