I managed to sneak a shot of one of these VR headsets on the 3dfx stand. Although not affiliated with 3dfx as such, their headsets utilise the TV out signal from the higher end Voodoo cards.
The headsets comprise a couple of VGA screens running at 640x480, a pair of headphones and the motion sensing equipment (both on the headset and an external sensor). They should support any game that allows free mouse look, but instead of using a mouse, you use your head to change the view. The setup I used was complemented with a game pad, but you could use the keyboard instead.
Although the screen resolution is only 640x480, it`s perfectly adequate for most FPS style games. It took me a few seconds to get used to the control combination, but after that it was fine. An added benefit will be nice strong neck muscles after a few days of play although quite how well the headset or the wearer would cope with a competitive FPS match remains to be seen. They are equipped with well placed foam pads to make prolonged wearing easier however.
Performance wise, they use the TV out signal on the video card, so there`s no performance drop at all. The physical experience of being able to play the game in this way more than compensates for running the games at the relatively low 640x480 resolution.
The catch ? Well it`s got to be the price really. A set will set you back a cool UKP999. You can get more information from Z-Net.
