Apple is the most-covered tech company

Here's a bit of news that's no shock to us. According to the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, Apple receives more coverage from the press than any other tech company.

The research center recently concluded a year-long study, which found that a full 15.1 percent of all tech articles were about Apple. Google commanded 11.4 percent of articles while 3 percent were primarily about Microsoft. The study used data from 52 newspapers, broadcast, and websites from June 2009 through June 2010.

What's powering Apple's popularity? Its computers represent only a fraction of those in use. However, the iPhone and the iPod's meteoric rise to stardom, and ...

Safari Extension highlight: gleeBox

With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.

gleeBox will certainly delight keyboard jockeys, as it replaces many browser-based tasks you'd typically complete by mousing around with super-easy hotkey commands. For example, you can call on URLs by hitting the proper command and typing the name of the URL in the resulting overlay. In fact, it'll recognize what you're typing so you needn't type the whole thing.

gleeBox also executes bookmarklets in the same way, so you can add a long article to Instapaper, for example, without ever touching the mouse.

It's not for everyone, but those who like keeping their hands on the keyboard at all times should find it useful.

Apple seems obsessed with researching methods to identify users of iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices. The sensors would be placed on the back surface of the gadget. According to the general idea of the patent, the sensors could be used to create button areas under each finger, letting you hold the device whatever way you desire—right hand or left, both, or death grip. Apple TVs are on the way from Shenzhen

Wow.

The new Apple TVs are now being shipped from Shenzhen, China to a variety of destinations, and most people are seeing either Thursday, September 30 or Friday, October 1 as the delivery date.

Change in iPhone policies prompts EU to drop...

The European Commission has dropped not one, but two antitrust investigations into Apple—one for the company's decision to restrict tools used in iOS development, and the other for forcing iPhone users in Europe to return to the country of purchase in order to get warranty repairs. Both of these policies have since been updated since the EU first opened its investigations, and the Commission appears to be pleased with the changes.

The lesser known of the two issues—at least to those outside the EU—concerned iPhone repairs and where, exactly, users could go to get them. Apple said that users who bought iPhones could only get them fixed in the country of purchase, which proved to be a frustrating rule for Europeans on-the-go. (The US equivalent would be if you were restricted to the same...

New Apple TVs prepared for shipment

We received a lot of tips today from people who ordered the new $99 Apple TV on September 1st and have, like me, been anxiously checking the order status in the online Apple Store. As of today, many orders are showing the message you see above -- that the device has been "prepared for shipment" sometime in September.

Well, today is September 27th, which doesn't leave all that much time for Apple or the OEM to ship these devices. My guess is that the 747 freighters are lining up on the tarmac in Shanghai or Hong Kong, waiting to be loaded with the first half-million or so Apple TVs.

Fellow TUAW blogger Mike Rose and I both ordered our Apple TVs shortly after the announcement on September 1st, so whoever gets the first one will probably take dibs on doing a full review of the new iOS-powered streaming video box. Be sure to visit TUAW regularly this week for all of your Apple TV news.

TUAW's Daily App: Aftermath

I'll be honest -- I heard that Aftermath was a zombie game and almost gave up on it. I wouldn't be offended if you did the same, since lots of developers (especially iPhone developers) are depending a little too much on zombies for their gameplay. Yes, it's fun to fight the walking undead, but they're used over and over again because a) they're easy to program, and b) they let you make a "shooting humans" game without getting involved in the whole morality thing.

But Aftermath is still worth a look. While a lot of zombie games on the store go abstract or silly, this one sticks pretty close to realistic, and it has some serious quality and interesting gameplay behind it. You're fighting zombies and moving through levels, but instead of aiming and shooting a gun, you're actually aiming a flashlight, and your gun automatically fires for you. The projected light...

Xsanity Interviews Marcel Borsten

By: aaron

Hi folks! I'm very excited to introduce a new regular feature to Xsanity: interviews with members of our community. My plan is to publish these about once each week. I hope you find these to be a unique way to bring sanity to Mac enterprise storage and systems.

To kick this off, I pleased to introduce Macel Borsten, pictured at right. Marcel is the founder of Impart, a provider of podcasting solutions for education. They are based in Leiden, The Netherlands, and have customers in The Netherlands and Belgium. At the moment, Impart has three employees. He's also the administrator of PodcastProducer.org, which bears a passing resemblance to another site I've seen.

Apple Patents Directional Flash Tech For Cameras

tekgoblin writes "A patent application has surfaced that shows Apple's attempts at creating a new way for a flash to work on a camera. The way the new flash works is very intriguing: a user can select a dimly lit area of the photo and the camera will try to illuminate just that area with the flash. The way Apple is attempting to accomplish this is similar to the way the autofocus works on the iPhone 4 where you can touch the screen in certain areas to focus on that area. Instead you will be able to light up that area with the flash. This is accomplished by the camera flash passing through a 'redirector' so the flash can be placed other than directly centered when a photo is taken."

Feature: Parallels Desktop 6: The Ars Review

It has been less than ten months since we reviewed Parallels Desktop 5, a competent but buggy release from Parallels. Shipping paid updates with stability issues seems to be the company's modus operandi, so I was a little skeptical when I saw that a new version was already being released, since the last one had so many issues that needed ironing out. The feature list of Parallels Desktop 6 isn't what I'd call ambitious—the main focus of version 6 has been on the 64-bit host and increased speed, mostly for 3D and gaming. Gaming was already Parallels' forte, but I was curious to see if the new version would finally make playing modern games with complex shaders, high resolutions, and high-quality audio a reality. If it doesn't...

iOS alarms broken for New Zealand users after...

We just started Daylight Saving Time in New Zealand yesterday. Since then, many iOS users here have experienced what's probably one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen: our alarms are now going off an hour early. My iPhone's alarm woke me up at 5:50 in the morning today instead of 6:50, and it turns out I'm not the only one.

In the iPhone's built-in Clock app, setting a recurring alarm will cause it to trigger an hour early every time if you're running iOS 4.1, iTunes 10.0.1, and live in a Southern Hemisphere country that's just gone over to Daylight Saving Time (which, for now at least, just means New Zealand). It's also been affecting US users in Indiana...

Apple, Startup Go To Trial Over 'Pod'...

suraj.sun writes with this excerpt from Ars Technica: "Apple is scheduled to go to trial with a startup to fight over a three-letter word: Pod. The trademark battle centers on independent entrepreneur Daniel Kokin, founder of startup Sector Labs, and his video projector in development called Video Pod. Apple had previously filed oppositions against Kokin's usage of 'Pod,' alleging that it would cause customers to confuse it with Apple's iPod products. ... Names that have come under fire include MyPodder, TightPod, PodShow, and even Podium. Sector Labs is the only company to go to trial with Apple over using the 'Pod' branding. Ana Christian, Kokin's lawyer, says the fight is about more than allowing small businesses to use 'Pod' in their product names. She noted a trend in the tech industry, in which large corporations have been attempting to assume ownership of ordinary words."

European Union closes Apple investigation

I think we can call this one "saved by a policy change." Earlier this month, Apple changed its rules and is now allowing developers to use third-party tools for creating apps for iOS devices. In a statement released this weekend, the EU said it welcomed Apple's changed policies, and that the investigation would be closed.

Apple also loosened policies on cross-border warranty repair of computers and iOS products. Previously, people who bought a product in one EU country and tried to have it fixed under warranty in another EU country encountered red tape or a refusal to fix the product, but apparently that issue's been fixed as well.

This recent change is on top of Apple settling a case with the US Department of Justice...

HyperDock puts some Win7 in your OS X Dock

My shocking day job revelation: I write enterprise Java software using Windows. There, my secret shame is finally out.

Now that that's off my chest, I have something to confess about Windows 7: Microsoft must be doing something right because I hate it considerably less than any other version of Windows. For example, it might have taken it eight years to bring the draggable reorder feature from OS X 10.0's Dock into the Windows taskbar, but they got there in the end, and I'm a happier user for it.

One of the things I quite like is Aero Peek. Suppose you are juggling three PowerPoint presentations because you are a SRS BSNS enterprise user, so obviously, you're not doing anything fun. You move your cursor down to the PowerPoint icon in the taskbar, and three medium sized thumbnail icons pop up, each showing the current window contents of the three PowerPoint windows that you have open. This...
