Apple has been newly granted some 17 different patents, two of which would allow for a 3G-enabled MacBook, according to Patently Apple. Antennas for wireless electronic devices documents taking advantage of conductive housing in a notebook to produce antennas using dielectric members. In one part of the filing, Apple remarks that "cellular telephone communications could be handled using a multiband cellular telephone antenna and local area network data communications could be handled using a multiband wireless local area network antenna."...

What Is Lowtide? [What Is]

The iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch all use a menu system called "Springboard" that doesn't exist on the new Apple TV. But what the Apple TV uses instead might be coming to iPad.

Lowtide is the AppleTV iOS app...

While the new Apple TV uses the iOS operating system, its interface is even more closed than an iPad or iPhone. You won't be able to load apps from iTunes or browse the web using Safari. (At least not yet.)

Instead, the whole interface is an application called "Lowtide", essentially an updated version of the "Front Row" system that has been on Macs and older Apple TVs for years. Lowtide will handle all the user interaction, as well as the video playback and streaming, connecting to Macs or other iOS devices through AirPlay—it's an one-stop...

China Unicom sells 100,000 iPhone 4s in four days

After four days of availability, China Unicom (CU) has sold 100,000 iPhone 4s in China (here are some photos from launch day). Pre-orders began on September 16th, and CU reported earlier this week that 200,000 orders were taken. Today, all online reservations have come to a halt. Customers must be physically present at a retail store to buy one. For now, the iPhone 4 is outselling the iPhone 3GS many times over.

Phones bought through China Unicom require a two year service contract. However, the phone is also available contract-free at Apple stores.

Liu Liang, an analyst with consulting group iResearch, commented on the iPhone's popularity."The level of smartphone usage is...

HDCP exploit released, decrypts 1080p in real-time

The HDCP exploit Intel tried to downplay a couple of weeks ago is now being offered to the public. Created by Rob Johnson and Mikhail Rubnich, the open-source software is said to be capable of decrypting 1080p HDCP video in real-time. This does requires a moderately powerful system, however, with the creators saying a high-end, multi-core 64-bit CPU can decrypt 30FPS, 1080p content using two cores and about 1.6GB of RAM....

In a blog post talking about the future of Firefox Home (their iPhone app that syncs Firefox history, bookmarks and open tabs from desktop to iPhone), Mozilla dashed any dreams we possessed of a true Firefox browser for iPhone.

While Apple authorized Opera's browser app, Mozilla isn't too keen to try with their browser. They admit that "there are technical and logistical restrictions that make it difficult, if not impossible, to build the full Firefox browser for the iPhone," and instead are much more focused on Firefox Home, which they intend...

This morning we received word from Jesse Grosjean at Hog Bay Software that his new app, PlainText (free, in-app purchase to remove ads), is now available on the App Store. It's one of several iOS text editors that feature support for Dropbox, so we thought a quick roundup of these apps was in order. If you're thinking about joining me for NaNoWriMo 2010 starting on November 1st, it's a good idea to think about what device(s) you'll be writing on and getting your writing software ready to roll as soon as you can. Text editors make excellent writing tools, since they're bare bones and don't get in the way of putting words onto "paper."

TUAW's Daily App: Movie Night Out

Movie Night Out is a fun and free little app that can help with that seemingly ever-present question: "So what do you want to do tonight?" It's a piece of cake to use. Just punch in what you want to do for your movie night (maybe hit up some shopping, see the movie, and then grab dessert, or do dinner, check out an action hit, and then get coffee). The app will automatically find some options for each of your choices and put together a schedule that will let you do all three. You can check out information and reviews for all of the options, and even map out, share on Facebook or Twitter, or save your "night" for another time. There's not really anything here that you can't find in other apps, but the smooth interface and fun randomization of your choices make the free app worth a download.

If there's an...

Where iPad Goes, There Goes Apple

Confusion reigned in the market Tuesday, as the Dow, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq each slipped into early-morning freefalls, then rebounded to gains by the end of the day of 46.10, 5.54 and 9.82, respectively. That was caused by weak economic data, with consumer confidence slipping and the price of gold, which bears an inverse relation to the stock market hitting a new record of $1,309.20 an ounce. The confusion saw shares of Apple tumbling to $286.97 at one point, then shooting up to $289.32 in highly volatile trading.

Apple releases updated iOS 4.2, iTunes 10.1 betas to...

Late Tuesday, Apple released new betas of two major upcoming software releases, the upcoming versions of iOS 4.2 and iTunes 10.1.

CWG : An honor or a horror ?

The Commonwealth Games 2010 or the CWG 2010 as they are more popularly known now are always in the headlines . Sometimes for good reasons and sometimes for not so good reasons . India has got this opportunity to host a major sporting event . Many would consider this as an honor for the nation to play hosts to an event of such a large magnitude and involving so many nations .But the execution and the run up to this major event has been ridden with a lot of major horrors . So as Indian public , should we consider this an honor or a horror ? That is a very intriguing and complicated question to answer , let us try and look at this whole thing in depth and analyze this .
So how did the games come to Delhi ? The two principal bids for the 2010 Commonwealth Games were from Delhi, India and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A ballot of members was held in November 2003 at the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Delhi bid won by a margin of 46 votes to 22...

TUAW review: DomainBrain

I'm not much of a collector, but I do have an inordinate number of websites and domains to my name. How did that happen? You get an idea, buy a domain, and set up a site. Repeat that process a few times, and you find yourself in my situation.

What's worse is that I've been storing the login creds, database details, registrar information, and so much more in text files. Trying to find any bit of data is a real hassle, not to mention a security risk. Thank goodness for DomainBrain. This super piece of software from Anthony Piraino of One Button Mouse has relieved me of my stacks of text files, organized all of that information, and made anything I'm after instantly retrievable. Here's our review of DomainBrain.

The first reviews of the new Apple TV are starting to appear and we're rounding them up for you. Here's a look at the early impressions:

Fox News' Clayton Morris had plenty of good things to say about the Apple TV's features, but he also had a big concern:

The new Apple TV is small — hockey-puck small. That's impressive, but we all know size doesn't matter, whereas speed does. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly it connected to the iTunes library on my desktop computer. The Apple TV does this noticeably faster than its ancestor using a 'home sharing' option, which connects with any iTunes account in...

Which Words Does Google Instant Blacklist? [LIST]

Some folks at the Hacker publication 2600 decided to compile a list of words that are restricted by Google Instant.Except in extreme and special cases, Google is known for anything but censorship, but as weve said before, there are some terms the web giants new instant search feature wont work with.We understand Googles intentions; the team over there is trying to make sure that no one sees pornographic or violent results they might fight disturbing unless they really mean to search for them. When asked about this feature a few weeks ago, Googles Johanna Wright said the restrictions are in place to protect children. But Google has opened itself up to a potential PR problem, because some of these omissions will be at best bewildering and at worst offensive to particularly sensitive (or progressive) users who dont understand how Google Instant actually works. For example, bisexual and lesbian are among the restricted words. Type them in to Google and the instant search will immediately...

MacNN has reviewed PCsync for Mac, describing how the recently PC-only software works with its new Mac-host that allows for PC-to-Mac syncing. Almost-Satnav For Cycling

An anonymous reader writes "A couple of guys (us) in Cambridge have written a cycle routing system, CycleStreets.net, based on open data, and have now released it as a free iPhone app. It's been done on a shoestring, in spare time. There's an API and some disruptive tech in the form of a photo submission screen where street problems can be submitted directly. Because it's open data, you don't have to wait 6 months for the routing to be fixed if there's a bug. Android and .mobi versions are in the works, with the apps being done on GitHub."

In the midst of shipping the Apple TV, Apple has released Remote 2.0, the newest version of its iOS app for controlling iTunes and Apple TV.

Per Macworld, Remote 2.0 introduces several new features, not the least of which is a long-awaited interface designed for the iPad. The new software also features a gestures tab for controlling an Apple TV with iOS-like flick and drag motions.

The new app also supports Home Sharing, an easier method for sharing and streaming your media that Apple introduced in iTunes 9. If you enable Home Sharing in Remote 2.0 on your iPhone or iPad, it will automatically discover and let you control shared libraries on your network from a Mac or PC running iTunes, or a new Apple TV.

Remote 2.0 also boasts high-res graphics for the iPhone 4’s Retina display...

Apple TV Lowtide (Front Row) running on iPod touch

It's been Apple TV-palooza here at TUAW today. Shortly after discovering that the Apple TV iOS firmware could be downloaded and unpacked, we took our first peek under the hood and saw just how similar the new Apple TV, with its Lowtide software, was to previous Apple TV releases. Soon after, we discovered that the Lowtide application was built with multi-device support, including the iPad, in its list of supported hardware.

Twitter, algorithms, crowdsourcing used to spot...

A few years back, a certain late night host popularized a word that may or may not be in your dictionary: truthiness. Stephen Colbert was referring to what has become a very effective political tool, namely, statements that many people will accept as true because they feel right, even if they have no basis in reality. A small cottage industry has since sprung up to evaluate the amount of truth that exists in a potentially truthy statement (Politifact is probably the best example). Now, a bunch of academics at Indiana are attempting to use a combination of crowd-sourcing, Twitter, and automated text and network analysis to bring instances of political truthiness out into the open.

The team has set up a site, Truthy....

The ever-growing iTunes basket

The Guardian puts to words something I've been thinking for a long time: that iTunes is actually Apple's weakest link. You'd be forgiven for believing the opposite -- iTunes is arguably Apple's strongest brand, given that it encompasses all of the "mobile device company's" products, and remains the springboard for all iPhones, iPods, and iPads, even across into Windows-land. I'm sure there are even non-Apple customers that use iTunes to organize and share their music. So, there's no question that iTunes is a powerful component of Apple's success so far.

But at the same time, it's become a crutch. As John Naughton says, this is "feature creep on an heroic scale." The application was started as SoundJam, meant specifically for music playback, but at this point, iTunes serves as a movie and TV rental service, a music recommendation service, a phone activation service...

Xmarks calls it quits

I've been a big fan of Xmarks for a while now -- I work on a few Macs and PCs regularly, and while MobileMe is nice, I've always appreciated Xmarks' ease of use (after a one-time setup, it basically worked automatically) and compatibility across whatever browsers I happened to use. That's why I was disappointed to hear yesterday that they're calling it quits. Around 90 days from now, the servers will shut down, and Xmarks will be no more.

Co-founder Todd Agulnick goes through the story of the service on that blog post. It was originally developed as Foxmarks, and it was designed to work directly with the Firefox browser to sync bookmarks there. Eventually, they brought in large numbers of users with tons of bookmarks in their browsers, but...

Archeologists brave flinging bits of rock with the...

You hear about interesting uses for the iPad all the time, and many times, those uses are merely theoretical. Sure, using an iPad at an archeological dig sounds cool and practical and all, but does anybody really do it? As it turns out, the answer to that question is "yes."

In some of Apple's online promotional galleries, the company highlights a team of archeologists making use of the iPad for tasks such as text and graphical data entry. One of those in charge of the dig says that using the iPad for this work has saved countless hours of data entry that would have otherwise been done back at the field office.

Sure, the iPad needs to be sufficiently protected from the elements (such as, y'know, flying hunks of rock), but that's likely a small price to pay vs. paper notebooks with one's chicken scratch that someone needs to translate...

Office 2011 to ship October 26

That's right -- Office for Mac 2011 now has an on-sale date; it's October 26th, which is just about a month away. The suite will be the first Mac OS X version that offers Outlook rather than Entourage, and it will come in a few different flavors.
