FTC eyeing iPhone licensing changes, iAd
U.S. antitrust enforcers are eyeing the changes that Apple has made to its licensing agreement with iPhone application developers and are likely to open a preliminary investigation into whether the company's actions stifle competition in mobile devices, "people familiar with the situation" told "The Wall Street Journal" (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870361280457522255309149581...). And they're also apparently looking at iAd. The Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department, which are jointly tasked with enforcing federal antitrust laws, are holding discussions over which agency would hold the inquiry, these people said. Apple, the FTC and Justice Department all declined to comment to the "Journal." Those "people familiar with the matter" said the latest interest from regulators was triggered by complaints from Apple competitors and application developers over the terms of company's agreement with iPhone and iPad app developers. "The Journal" notes that Apple...

Hollywood Rethinks Smartphone Distribution
As Hollywood retools its product for the small screens of cellphones, its assumptions about mobile viewing are being upended by surprisingly patient consumers, according to the NYTimes. “We all thought they’d be watching video clips in the checkout line or between classes,” said Vivi Zigler, the president for digital entertainment at NBC Universal. But owners of iPhones and other smartphones are actually watching long episodes and sometimes complete films, so a growing number of media companies are vying for people’s mobile attention spans. The result - companies, from Hollywood studios to local TV stations, foresee a wireless world that they don’t want to be cut out of. In light of this shift some of the biggest local TV station owners in the United States announced a joint venture last month to transmit their content to viewers on the go. Roughly 17.6 million people in the United States watched video on their phones in the fourth quarter of last year, according to the Nielsen...

'iFixIt' tears down 3G iPad
"iFixIt" has offered a teardown (http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad-3G-Teardown/2374/1) of the 3G iPad and says it shows some interesting differences when compared to its Wi-Fi-only sibling, mostly due to its additional 3G / GPS functionality. Check out the highlights below. Here are some of the highlights of the teardown: ° The immediate visible difference is the inclusion of a black plastic RF window on top of the iPad for better antenna reception. ° The black RF window significantly changes the opening procedure. You can't start separating the display using the notches on the top (à la Wi-Fi version), since that will undoubtedly break the RF window. You have to start from the right side and gingerly proceed to the top and bottom of the iPad. ° There are actually five antennas in this iPad. There are two antennas that handle the cell reception -- one is in the RF window on top, the other attaches to the LCD frame. A single GPS antenna is also housed in the RF window on top. Just...

TV station moves from paper scripts to iPads
WFXL-TV in Albany, Georgia, has switched to iPads from paper scripts that anchors read on set, reports "Poynter Online" (http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=2&aid=182192). To change pages, anchors just swipe their fingers across the screen. To add scripts, producers print them to a PDF and send the PDF to an iPad e-mail account. Terry Graham, news director/anchor at WFXL, told "Poynter Online" that the station bought the iPads because it expects to save thousands in paper expenses. The move, he said, is not part of a promotion or partnership with Apple. On average, Graham says, his station spends $2,000 a month on paper and printer repairs, says "Poynter Online." Once he began thinking about the potential savings for the 15 stations owned by his company, Barrington Broadcasting, the experiment seemed worthwhile.

Apple's Lala shuts down; no hints as to what's next
A note at the Lala web site (http://www.lala.com) says "The Lala service will be shutting down on May 31" and "unfortunately, we are no longer accepting new users." Lala -- which offered "the first and only free fully licensed service to instantly provide anywhere web access to an existing music library such as iTunes" -- was purchased by Apple earlier this year. The goal is probably to allow Apple to implement a new iTunes feature that would allow users to stream their purchased media content remotely. In fact, rumors of such a service surfaced earlier this year. Purportedly, the service would allow iTunes shoppers to build up a digital video collection (music, movies, TV shows, etc.) without having to worry about the intensive storage space involved. iTunes Replay would, per the rumors, stream music, TV shows and movies purchased on iTunes, so you wouldn't have to download them after purchasing, freeing up hard drive space. -- Dennis Sellers

Adobe CEO offers rebuttal to Steve Jobs' Flash comments
In an interview with the "Wall Street Journal," Adobev CEO Shantau Narayen offered a rebuttal to Apple CEO Steve Jobs' thoughts on Flash (http://www.macnews.com/2010/04/29/what-steve-jobs-really-thinks-about-flash). You can read the entire article at http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/04/29/live-blogging-the-journals-interv..., but here are some highlights. Narayen says: ° Adobe believes in open content and support for multiple operating systems, while Apple/Jobs is apparently concerned about technology that works across multiple platforms. ° The technology problems that Jobs mentions in his essay are "really a smokescreen," as more than 100 applications that used Adobe's software were accepted in the Apple App Store. ° If Flash is crashing the Mac OS as Jobs claims, that has something to do with the "Apple operating system." ° Jobs' claim that Flash is a battery drainer is "patently false."

Jobs named to the '2010 TIME 100' list
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has been named to the "2010 TIME 100" (http://www.time.com/time/specials/bestworst/0,32232,1984685_1984745_1985...), TIME Magazine's list of "the people who most affect our world." It's his fifth appearance on the list.
Jeff Koons, an artist living in New York City, offered these thoughts on Jobs for the TIME list: "Apple's core ideal has always been to make people's experience of computing as accessible and pleasurable as possible. As a young man, Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, decided to be the Beatles of computing. I once said that I make what the Beatles would have made if they made sculpture, and I can appreciate how Steve, 55, applies their ethos of optimism to his work. The tools he has given us, from the Macs at my studio to the iPhone in my pocket, are like clean, new windows, fitting between our selves and our work elegantly, naturally and unobtrusively. It's great to see Steve stay true to his vision. I can imagine some young artist saying today, 'I make...

"The conform to master media will still happen correctly.” Matchback Magic adds metadata into the media file that's carried with the file, regardless of what happens inside Final Cut Pro or to the file. At the end of the editorial process, Matchback Magic extracts that information and provides either a fully conformed (to the original high quality media) Final Cut Pro Sequence, or an ALE file for conforming a Cinema Tools database, or even an Excel spreadsheet for manual conforming. "It's a hefty sum," says Phuc Truong, managing director at Mobext, a mobile marketing business owned by Havas SA whose clients include Sears, Choice Hotels, Amtrak and Volvo. CC File Converter for Mac OS X changes color profile of image...
Economy-x-Talk has released CC File Converter (http://www.color-converter.com), an utility for Mac OS X 10.4 and later to change the color profile of image files. Some graphics editing software packages call this the color mode, color space, or mode. For example, images can be in GIF, JPEG, PNG or TIFF format. Additionally, colors can be defined by a CMYK, RGB or other color space. Pictures may print slightly dark on some printers, while slightly brighter, or with a more intense red, on other printers. What Steve Jobs really thinks about Flash
In case you hadn't noticed, Apple CEO Steve Jobs isn't a big fan of Adobe Flash, a multimedia platform that is popular for adding animation and interactivity to web pages. And in an online post (http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/) he tells why -- and why he doesn't want Flash on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. "I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads," Jobs says. "Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store -- but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain." You can read his entire post for details, but here's a summary of his anti-Flash arguments: ° Flash products are 100% proprietary. ° Adobe has repeatedly said that Apple mobile devices cannot access...

IDC: worldwide microprocessor experience slight decline
A decline between a calendar year's fourth quarter and the next calendar year's first quarter is typical of seasonal demand patterns but this decline is less than normal. When compared to 1Q09, shipments in 1Q10 rose 39.0%. Total market revenue in 1Q10 fell 2.0% compared to 4Q09 and rose 40.4% compared to 1Q09. "PC processor shipments typically decline around 7 to 8 percent going from fourth quarter to first quarter," says Shane Rau director of Semiconductors: Personal Computing research at IDC. "A decline of 5.6% is modest and wouldn't mean much by itself. However, after the huge rise in shipments we saw in the fourth quarter, it adds more credibility to market recovery and that the PC industry anticipates improvement in PC end demand in 2010." Looking at market performance by computer form factor, mobile processors declined 6.3% quarter over quarter, desktop processors declined 5.1% quarter over quarter, and PC server processors declined 1.4% quarter over quarter. The overall market...

iPod.iTunes update ready for iTunes 9.1.1
CrispSofties (http://www.crispsofties.com/) has updated its iPod.iTunes music synchronization tool to version 4.5, which has been tweaked for iTunes 9.1.1. iPod.iTunes does real add-synchronization, even in two directions if desired. The source can be either the iPod or the iTunes library. The software evaluates the source for songs, videos, podcasts and/or playlists that are not in the target and only adds these seamlessly, avoiding duplicates. Unlike iTunes' own synchronization iPod.iTunes generally does not delete content in the target. iPod.iTunes can also transfer song dependent data like "My Rating", "Last Played", "Play Count", album artwork, etc. iPod.iTunes can be used for: keeping files and playlists on different Macs and iPods up to date; doing a full restore of songs, videos and playlists from iPod; reversing the accidental deletion of songs, videos and/or playlists in iTunes, if these are still on your iPod; transferring an iTunes library from one Mac to another via the...

New iPhone to go on sale during WWDC 2010?
Apple could put its next-generation iPhone on sale during the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), "sources familiar with the situation" tell "Mashable" (http://mashable.com/2010/04/28/apple-iphone-launch/), the "Social Media Guide." "Over the last two years, Apple has revealed both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS at WWDC," the article says. "However, the release of the actual iPhone hardware has traditionally come a few weeks after the announcement. Our sources say that Apple may break that tradition this year by shortening the timetable. An immediate release would also break another tradition: Apple fans camping out in front of Apple stores just so they can get their hands on the company’s newest product." Indeed, the iPhone and the iPad are getting the lion's share of attention from Apple regarding WWDC, which will be held June 7-11 at San Francisco's Moscone West. Apple says "this year’s WWDC offers developers in-depth sessions and hands-on working labs to learn more about...

Apple acquires Siri, a 'mobile assistant' company
Apple has acquired Siri (http://siri.com), a mobile "assistant" app maker, heating up the Apple-Google competition. According to a pre-merger notification released by the Federal Trade Commission, and first noticed by Robert Scoble (http://twitter.com/Scobleizer/status/13015365163), the transaction apparently won't be held up by any antitrust reviews. Here's how Siri describes itself: "Just like a real assistant, Siri understands what you say, accomplishes tasks for you and adapts to your preferences over time. Today, Siri can help you find and plan things to do. You can ask Siri to find a romantic place for dinner, tell you what’s playing at a local jazz club or get tickets to a movie for Saturday night. "Siri is young and, like a child taking its first steps, may be awkward at times. Siri may occasionally misunderstand things you ask it to do even within its range of understanding. "Nonetheless, Siri will improve quickly by getting to know you better and understanding a broader...

Analyst: Windows switchers double size of the Mac installed base
Needham & Company analyst Charles Wolf told clients in a note today that Apple's retail stores have attracted lots of users from the Windows world and play a pivotal role in the Apple-Microsoft competition. "[The Apple Stores] have become a magnet in attracting Windows users to the Mac platform," says Wolf. He says that -- as Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer has said -- that Windows users purchased half of the 606,000 Macs sold in the stores during the March quarter, he added. Needham estimates that, since 2004, more than 18 million Windows users have switched to a Mac. "Mac sales in the March quarter were almost four times higher than they were in the second quarter of fiscal 2004," wrote Wolf. He adds that Windows switchers have more than doubled the size of the Mac installed base. The analyst said that same-store sales rose 8% in the March quarter of 2010, thanks to a 22.3% year-over-year increase in Mac sales, even though no new Macs weren't introduced during...

Microsoft, HTC patent agreement may affect Apple's lawsuit
Microsoft and HTC have signed a patent agreement that provides broad coverage under Microsoft's patent portfolio for HTC's mobile phones running the Android mobile platform. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties from HTC. And the deal may help HTC in its legal fight with Apple. Last month Apple filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware. "We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said at the time. "We've decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours." But when it comes to today's announcement, "HTC and Microsoft have a long history of technical and commercial...

PTC wants Apple to be harder on inappropriate' iPhone/iPod...
On one hand, Apple is being criticized for censoring apps at the Apple App Store. On the other, the socially conservative Parents Television Council (PTC) thinks many of the iPhone/iPod touch apps available -- such as "My Vibe," which converts the iPhone into a vibrator, and "Love Positions Free," which has drawings of couples having sex -- should be banned as well, notes "FOX News" (http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/04/27/apple-iphones-porno-apps-stimu...). The group has publicly demanded that Apple stop providing porn to children -- and clean up its act. And they want Apple to do more. Gavin McKiernan, the PTC's grassroots director, said Apple executives assured the group that the content on its App Store would be clean, and he hopes that any remaining pornographic applications or the many sexually-themed "wallpapers" still available are "there by mistake, possibly."

Analysts say seizing of blogger's computers may harm Apple
While law-enforcement officials ponder the legality of computer equipment seized from the home of a blogger, analysts on Tuesday say Apple may be doing itself harm in the case of a missing iPhone prototype that ended up on the Internet, according to a "MarketWatch" (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/apple-doing-itself-harm-in-case-of-miss...) report. Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies Associates said in an interview that Apple blundered by making the case a criminal one, as opposed to a civil case. "There is no way that this is not negative in some way for the company," Kay told "MarketWatch." "The question here is what is Apple hoping to get?" "Apple has been drifting into looking like the wrong side of their famous Big Brother ad for some time," added Rob Enderle, a longtime Silicon Valley technology analyst. "This could easily turn out to be one of the biggest mistakes the firm has ever made because the investigation ... could showcase other Apple problems as this story snowballs."

Toshiba designs 'glasses free' 3D display
One of the reason some folks think 3D will be slow to catch on in home is the fact that home 3D screens, like those, in movie theaters, require those funky 3D glasses. Toshiba may have solved that. According to "TG Daily" (http://www.tgdaily.com/hardware-features/49540-toshiba-designs-glasses-f...), has designed a 21-inch autostereoscopic high-definition display for use with next-generation 3D monitors. The display also purportedly helps to "significantly" reduce 3D-related eye fatigue. "Most 3D products have used special glasses to separate a picture into two images: one for the left eye and the other for the right eye. But the market has strongly desired a more versatile and glasses-free approach that could be used anywhere," Toshiba says in a press release. "This new product employs an integral imaging system (a 'light field' display) to reproduce a real object as a 3D image that can be viewed without glasses over a wide range of viewing angles." According to Toshiba, the integral...

And Tom R. Halfhill, an analyst with Microprocessor Report, told the publication he believed the acquisition price was US$121 million. Police may expand criminal probe into misplaced iPhone prototype
The criminal probe into Apple's "misplaced" iPhone prototype is expected to broaden, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told "CNET" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20003477-37.html?part=rss&subj=news&ta...). San Mateo County's investigation may expand beyond Gawker Media's Gizmodo.com, which acknowledged buying the prototype for US$5,000, and the unknown person who sold it to the gadget blog, the source said. Police obtained a warrant to search a Gizmodo editor's home on Friday evening. "CNET" says that one reason for an expanded investigation is obvious: law enforcement wants to learn who found the so-called 4G prototype and offered it for sale. California law makes it a crime for someone to find lost property but not return it.
