Dell enters mainstream tablets with swivelling...

Dell took to the stage at the Intel Developer Forum today with the surprise unveiling of a netbook and tablet hybrid it said will be a real production model. The Inspiron Duo when closed acts as a 10-inch Windows 7 tablet but can spin the display within the frame to face inwards and work as a traditional netbook. The dual design would not only be less bulky than a traditional convertible tablet but would open the door to tablet-sized docks, such as one to add speakers for movies and music at home....

Steve Jobs Tries To Sneak Shurikens On A Plane

An anonymous reader writes "Steve Jobs, while on a family vacation to Japan in July, picked himself up some Shuriken, otherwise known as Ninja throwing stars, as a souvenir. In his wisdom he decided to put them in his carry on luggage for the return journey. As it was a private plane he probably thought there would be no issue, but he was wrong. Even private plane passengers have to have all their baggage scanned, and the throwing stars were detected and deemed a hazard. It's alleged that Jobs argued that he could take them on the plane as no one could steal them on his private jet and use them. Security at the airport disagreed and demanded he remove the stars. Jobs, clearly angry at losing his throwing weapons, stated he would not be returning to the country." Undoubtedly this is part of the iNinja project.

Apple profiles iPads used in big business

Apple has published profiles of four large businesses that use iPads in their daily functioning. The first, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, explains how their staff has replaced older tools with the iPad. "I don't carry a calculator. I used to subscribe to all the journals: the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times. That's all disappeared. It's all on iPad."

Additionally, guests who check into Hyatt's Andaz brand hotels are greeted with iPad-wielding staff who let them swipe a credit card, check in, and receive a card key that was encoded by the iPad itself. Since the iPad is so portable, there's no need for guests to stand in line at the desk.

Also featured is RehabCare, a St. Louis-based medical rehab facility. They've eliminated a lot of paper from their process by introducing the iPad, using it to enter patient data, track records, and more.

TUAW preview: NimbleBit's Pocket Frogs

Since I got my new iPhone 4 a few weeks back, I've been playing more games than ever on Apple's little handheld. I just recently got back into Ngmoco's We Rule. It's probably the pinnacle of the "freemium" genre on the iPhone so far. It's free to play, very social, and very much based on timed "check-ins," where you set crops to grow and then come back in a few hours to harvest them. It puts in little blips of gameplay that move you towards a larger progress goal.

The only problem is that We Rule isn't all that fun; it's a bunch of clicking and grinding. So, lately I've been wondering when someone would add a fun freemium game to the App Store. It would have to be something that was social and progressive and all that that entails, but it would also need to have a game component that was actually fun to play.

Enter NimbleBit! They're following up on their great froggy...

Is Game Center limited to 500 friends?

Rene Ritchie at TiPb recently noticed that Apple's new Game Center seems to be capped at 500 friends, which another user was able to confirm.

After receiving 500 friend requests*, Rene noticed they stopped coming in. He figured that was the end until he saw a tweet from fellow Game Center user MuscleNerd:

"So much for my not-so-secret plan to break GameCenter! They're capping my friend count at 500 (as soon as I delete 1, I get 1 new request)."

After some testing, Rene confirmed the same thing. As soon as one request was deleted, another popped up. So, if you've got a lot of requests waiting beyond 500, you won't see them. As Rene correctly points out, most people won't have this problem as 500 is a heck of a lot of friends. Still, it's something to keep in mind lest would-be friend...

HDCP ëMaster Keyí supposedly discovered

News has emerged that the HDCP ëMaster Keyí, which permanently unlocks the DRM protocol on Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and displays with HDMI inputs may have been cracked. HDCP DRM works by embedding keys to encrypt and decrypt protected data in the devices and ports, so where content may have been compromised, a future firmware update will stop the compromised data from working. The supposed ëMaster Keyí is said to allow anyone to create their own source and sink key, thereby permanently bypassing the DRM protocol....

Greg's bite: the Nokia story

By Greg Mills
Nokia, in big trouble

I can remember having Nokia cell phones, but that goes back a few years. Recently the smart phone revolution has taken it's toll, and Nokia's market share has fallen off dramatically.  In an attempt to reinvigorate the company, they ditched their CEO of long standing, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo to tap a former Microsoft Executive, Stephen Elop for the job. To a great extent it might be sort of like rearranging the deck chairs on the doomed ship Titanic.

Apple's Express Lane is Their Faster Online...

Available for Apple customers still within their warranties, Express Lane is a fancy tech support service for cutting down forum-trawling to find help faster. It also stores details on previous issues you've had with their products.

It's a nice gesture from Apple, and with any luck will help sidestep the need to book in an appointment at the Genius Bar to get something fixed. Detailing the issue at hand before making the trek into town to a shop could save valuable time if it's a relatively easy fix.

Serial numbers are required when lodging a question, but otherwise the site might be able to offer assistance straight away, once the relevant boxes have been ticked. It's pretty easy to use, and is available now. [...

Apple warns App Store name squatters

TechCrunch reports that Apple is cracking down on "app name squatters," developers who create an app and reserve a name on the App Store, but don't actually upload files to release and sell the app. Apparently this is an issue -- personally, I can't immediately think of any names that I'd need to have on the App Store (maybe it's something really generic, like iReader?), but there are supposedly a few developers who have a certain name in mind, but can't use it because a squatter has locked it up in iTunes Connect. In fact, our own Victor Agreda foresaw this problem a while back, and now it's popped up on Apple's radar.

There's good news, though. Apple will now send out a warning after 90 days of locking up a name with no actual files uploaded, and then 30 days later will delete the record on the App Store. And notices are...

This will be the shortest Daily App post I've ever had to write. LucasArts has inexplicably put the iPhone version of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge Special Edition on sale for just US 99 cents. Go buy it. You're welcome.

Oh, you need more? This is one of the most beloved LucasArts adventure games of all time, and it's actually two games in one. They redrew and recorded all new voices and audio just for this edition, and you can switch between the old and the new games at any time. It's got a new control scheme, or you can point and click your way around the old control scheme. It's hilarious, beautiful, still original, and just plain captivating.

Oh, and it's usually $7.99 (in fact, the iPad version is still priced at $9.99, even during this sale). Just go buy this game right now! This is a crazy bargain for iPhone gamers, and you should consider yourself lucky to have...

Apple Will Make Mobile Video Calling Ubiquitous

When I first learned about Apple's FaceTime video-calling feature on its iPhone 4 units, I was a bit skeptical. I thought there were too many hoops to jump through. I thought Apple's TV ad with families gushing over newborn babies and showing off ultrasounds to soldiers was just a sappy marketing ploy. And the free 888 FaceTime number Apple created to let customers FaceTime with some stranger employed by Apple? I never bothered to try it out. After using it, though, I realize I was wrong. Now, one thing is certain: Apple's FaceTime video calling simply rocks.

Nokia Beats Apple and Android In Shipment of...

Nokias annual convention, the Nokia World 2010 is on a full swing today in London, with the Finnish mobile giant unwrapping surprises from its goodie bag. Amongst all the other announcements from new phones to Ovi Store updates, Angry Birds and new Nokia browser, the company also startled the audience by revealing some interesting shipment statistics for its smartphones, across the globe.
Courtesy: Engadget
So all those who thought Nokia had lost the smartphone game and needed to overhaul its product lineup, might want to think again. According to the company, Nokia moves around 260,000 smartphones a day, pretty ahead of the two competitors it has always been accused of losing to. If some recent stats are to be believed, Apple ships somewhere around 80,000 iPhones per day, and Android activate 200,000 devices per day.
So now you can imagine Nokia grinning at your face for talking foul about it.
Besides, another interesting announcement from the stage comes...

HDCP 'master key' supposedly released,...

Just as the MPAA is preparing to offer movies to customers at home while they're still in theaters by limiting playback to DRM-protected digital outputs only, the HDCP protocol they rely on may have been cracked wide open. All devices that support HDCP, like Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and displays with HDMI inputs, have their own set of keys to encrypt and decrypt protected data and if keys for a particular device are compromised, they can be revoked by content released in the future which will then refuse to play. Now, posts have been floating around on Twitter about a supposed "master key" which renders that protection unusable since it allows anyone to create their own source and sink keys.

Who discovered this and by what technique isn't immediately clear, but as early as 2001 security researcher Niels Ferguson proposed that it could be easily revealed by knowing the keys of less than 50 different devices. Hardware HDCP rippers like the HDfury2 and DVIMAGIC have been...

The iPad may be on track to become Apple's second highest source of revenue within the next several years, according to a projection published by analyst Daniel Tello. The outlook does not anticipate any cannibalization of the Mac segment, as Apple's computer sales are expected to keep climbing through the foreseeable future....

40.1 million people are playing games on iDevices,...

Here are two interesting stats about iOS gaming to round out your Monday. First up, a new industry survey says that 40.1 million people in the US are playing games on Apple's mobile devices -- that's over half of the 77 million strong total gaming audience. That's a huge market share, especially considering this platform has only existed for a few years.

By comparison, Sony's PSP system only has an audience of around 18 million, and Nintendo's DS audience in the States sits at 41 million. We've talked about sales of all of those systems before, but the same survey says that while two-thirds of gamers will pay for games on traditional handhelds, a much smaller percentage will pay for games on the iDevices (only 45% on iPhone and iPod touch, and only 32% on iPad).

Not that apps aren't bringing money in -- Parks Associates also says that...

App Store squatters may find loopholes as Apple...

Squatting on app names in Apple's App Store has, until now, been rather simple to pull off. After an initial $99 fee, any person could reserve as many application names as they wanted with no fear of repercussions. Apple has changed that with a new policy, and has now apparently begun to enforce it.

The policy reads something like this: if you don't upload a binary within 90 days of staking your claim, you get a letter. If there's no binary a month after the initial letter, Apple reclaims the name and deletes your app from iTunes Connect.

We first became aware of the new policy when developer Daniel Jalkut of Red Sweater Software posted the...

Drobo wants Mac users to "Upgrade your RAID...

Did you buy one of those "quasi-RAID" storage devices over the last few years? You know, the ones that tried to squeeze a few hard disks into a shiny silver box and call it RAID? In many cases, those devices simply implemented RAID 0 (block-level striping without parity or mirroring) as a way to create a big drive out of two or more smaller drives. If one drive fails, the entire array is toast.

Well, Data Robotics wants to save Mac users from that harrowing experience by offering to "Upgrade your RAID." Until the end of the month of September, you can trade in a qualifying device (which will be sent to a reputable electronics recycler) and receive 10% off of a DroboPro or DroboElite,...

Newest Canadian Apple Store draws hundreds

Here's a local report from Newmarket, Ontario in Canada, where Apple opened up a brand new store at the Upper Canada Mall over the weekend. Apparently hundreds of people were in line for the opening on Saturday morning, trying to get the iPhone 4 as well as all of the new iPod devices. Everybody involved sounds pretty happy, from the people who got in line starting at 4:30am, to the manager of the new store and the landlord in the mall itself. Then again, maybe that's their Canadian friendliness coming through.

Good for Newmarket -- Toronto was one of the closest stores to the town, but now the folks up there will have to travel 60 fewer kilometers to get their Apple fix. Congrats on the new store, eh?

Properly Indicating Required Device Capabilities

If your app requires certain hardware features to run properly on a user's device, you need to add a list of those requirements to the UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities key in your Info.plist file. However, you should only add keys for features you must have. Setting a key to false is not the same as leaving out the key. When you set a key to false, you are instructing your app to run only if the device does not have the requirements. Ensuring that you have properly set your UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities key is important so that users don't install your app on a device that lacks the necessary hardware.

You can learn more about properly indicating specific hardware requirements in your Info.plist file by reading Understanding the UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities key.

CBS News launches dedicated iPad app

iPad owners looking for CBS News content now have a free app for that. CBS is following the lead of ABC News with an app that caters to the dimensions of the iPad. The CBS News app features an easy to use interface that includes stories, images, videos, and even various CBS News Twitter feeds.

Like much of TV news, there is a lot of stuff, but not much depth. Stories usually run just a few paragraphs, but sometimes there is some more welcome detail.

Many of the videos are from CBS owned CNET, but they are tech specific and appear to be there as filler. There is no local news, other than your local temperature, and every time you quit the app and come back in, you have to tell the app to use your local location. That's just dumb.

iTunes - the item you tried to buy is no longer...

I tried to update my iOS apps today using iTunes and was greeted with this error. Given that I had told iTunes to update all of the 60+ apps it told me were out of date, this was hardly helpful.

There are a lot of things wrong with this error message. First of all, it gives me absolutely no idea which app is not available. Second, I had asked iTunes which apps needed to be updated, and it told me that this Mystery App was out of date. How can it be out of date if it isn't available at all? Third, after telling me that this one application wasn't available, iTunes failed to update the other 60+ applications.

The prospect of manually updating them all was fairly annoying. As I looked through all of the apps shown on the Update page, I realized that one of the apps didn't have the "Update Now" button next to it, and deduced that was the app causing the problem. I went into the main list of...

Gamers make faster decisions than nongamers, are...

There's a significant controversy over the value of games that are designed to improve people's mental faculties, as some studies have indicated that brain training only helps prepare you for similar tasks, while others indicate that general improvements are possible. But there turns out to be a type of game that is known to boost a variety of skills, from decision making to tracking multiple objects: standard action games. A study, released today by Current Biology attempts to explain how these video games can produce such wide-ranging improvements.

The authors of the study argue that the root of all these tasks involves making a probabilistic inference, where complete information is missing, so people have to make a best guess based on known odds. Video gaming, in their view, increases the efficiency at which people can process the odds and make an accurate decisiongamers simply can do more with less. As a result, any task of this sort sees benefits.

With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website, TUAW is highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.

Today's extension highlight is Add to Reader by Richard Käll. Like most of the extensions we've highlighted so far, it makes one aspect of online life easier. In this case, it's adding feeds to your Google Reader account. Instead of clicking a site's feed button and adding the address to Reader, you simply press the little toolbar button and presto! You're done.

You're still bumped away from the page you're reading, which is unfortunate. I'd be happier if it worked in the background or by popping up and then closing a separate window the way the Instapaper bookmarklet does, but I still like it.
