THEMISTO - MOON OF JUPITER

Themisto (S/1975 J1), is named after daughter of Hypseus, second wife of Athamas, the king of Orchomenus. Very little is known about Themisto. Themisto was found in 1975 but was lost before its orbit could be confirmed. Thermisto was rediscovered in 2000 and given the designation S/2000 J1. Themisto is very small, only 4 km across.

Orbit
Themisto orbits Jupiter far beyond the Himalia Group and the Galilean satellites, at an average distance of 0.7 million kilometres in an eccentric, highly inclined retrograde orbit - opposite to that of Jupiter itself and the planet's larger moons.

Interior
