THE MOONS OF MARS

Mars has two tiny satellites which orbit very close to the surface. They were discovered by Asaph Hall in 1877 and named Phobos and Deimos, the Greek words for fear and terror - appropriate for companions to Mars, the god of war. Phobos and Deimos appear to be captured asteroids - perhaps during their wanderings through the inner solar system they came close to Mars once too often.
