Installation 3.1 Installation of the ELSA Windows driver with ELSA SETUP.EXE You can install the ELSA WINNER Windows drivers with the program SETUP.EXE on this disk "Drivers for Windows 3.1x" or with CD ROM. Start Windows, call in the "Program Manager" "File"/"Run ...", enter the commandline "a:setup" or the corresponding path on the ELSA CD (e.g. \WINNER\1000AVI\WIN31\SETUP.EXE) and confirm with "OK". SETUP asks for your language, installs the WINNER Windows drivers and configures with WINman a fitting graphics mode. Afterwards (and also at following calls of SETUP), when the Windows driver installation is o.k., you may install additional Windows utility programs. 3.2 Installation of the ELSA Windows driver with Microsoft SETUP.EXE Make sure to have the original Windows 3.1 distribution disk present. The installation procedure will ask you for some of these disks. To install the ELSA WINNER Windows drivers, please exit Windows and change to your Windows directory and run the Microsoft SETUP program. Select the menu 'displays', scroll down to the end of the list and select 'Other'. (In case you update an existing installation do NOT select any WINNER entries from this list, but rather refer to section 6.1 in this file.) SETUP will ask for a floppy disk. Please insert the ELSA WINNER Windows disk into your floppy drive and press . SETUP will offer a list of choices of ELSA WINNER graphic boards to install from the floppy. Please locate and select the entry that corresponds to product name of your WINNER board.' SETUP will install and change all neccessary files for you. If you update an existing installation, SETUP will ask whether it should update or keep old files. Please be sure to press to update the existing files. After SETUP completes the installation rerun Windows. ELSA WINman will automatically be launched. WINman is a tool to help you configure and customize the WINNER board and your monitor. You can request help in WINman anytime by pressing the key. CAVEAT: Do NEVER enter the path to your Windows system directory if SETUP asks for a DISK. Otherwise the update fails possibly. The program WINman cannot change the refresh rate for the WINNER 100VL. To change the refresh rate use the program REFRESH.EXE on the WINNER System Disk. Also refer to: section 6.1 network installation 3.3 User Hints WINman WINman installs itself in the Program Group ELSAware in Windows. After the initial installation and first call, you can call WINman from your Program Group ELSAware. At first use you should run "First ..." completly inclusive storing a Windows graphicmode. Later you may modify your graphics mode under "Graphicmode ...". After storing more than one graphicmode, WINman starts with a fast graphics mode switching menu. Then you may switch your Windows graphics mode very fast without testing with test screens. In all menus you will find context sensitive help (with "Help"- button or with F1-key). 3.4 Video-acceleration with DCI 3.4.1 Installation of DCI-support To activate the DCI capability of the graphics board, you have to install VfW 1.1d (or higher) from the delivered ELSA CD. Even when you have installed VfW before, it is necessary to run the installation from the ELSA CD, because some additional files are copied to the windows system directory and the file SYSTEM.INI is modified, too. To install VfW you have to run SETUP.EXE under windows from the directory \ELSAWARE\VFW from the ELSA CD. The following files are copied to the windows system directory: UDH.DLL (Universal Draw Handler) DCIMAN.DLL (DCI-Manager) The installation-software also modifies the SYSTEM.INI-file: [DRIVERS] DCI=display vids.draw=udh.dll [WINNER.DRV] DCI-SUPPORT=1 3.4.2 Hints - If an application doesn't use DCI, there will be no acceleration. - DCI allows direct access of visible display-memory (called "Primary Surface"). If no DCI is available, an application needs two steps to render an image: First it renders the image into a bitmap in the computer's main memory. Then it uses GDI to copy the bitmap onto the visible display. With DCI the program can write directly into the display's memory, which is faster than using GDI and a bitmap. The disadvantage is, that the data must be compatible to the display's color-depth (e.g 8-bit palettized, 16-bit hicolor, 32-bit true-color), otherwise the application has to convert the color-space itself, which takes a lot of time. DCI "Primary Surface" is supported by: 1000PRO, 1000TRIO, 1000AVI, 2000AVI, 2000PRO, 2000PRO/X - Some WINNER-gui-accelerators have integrated circuitry to minimize the amount of CPU-power needed to playback video. These boards support access to invisible display-memory (called "OffScreen Surface"), managed by our WINNER-DCI driver. When an application finished drawing into offscreen, it advises the DCI-driver to render the offscreen-image into visible display-memory. The DCI-driver uses the accelerator- hardware to perform shrinking, stretching and/or color- conversion. Increasing resolution and color-depth shrinks available offscreen-memory, so that a video may not fit into it anymore. This causes the DCI-driver to switch back to "Primary Surface". DCI "OffScreen Surface" is supported by: 1000AVI, 2000AVI, 2000PRO/X - When using DCI with 256 colors, activate color-scheme "windows standard". 3.5 TrueColor now with 24 bpp For the graphics boards WINNER 2000AVI-4 and WINNER 2000PRO/X-4 it is possible to use a 24 bpp driver for TrueColor. The big advantage of this feature is that you can use the resolution 1280x1024 with TrueColor. 3.5.1 Hints - The 24 bpp driver doesn't support DCI. Please use the other drivers (8 bpp, 16 bpp, 32 bpp). - The ELSA Powerdraft driver for AutoCAD for Windows does not support 24 bpp. Please use the other drivers, too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Using Windows with a 2nd graphics board If you use the second WINNER board for Windows add the command "board=1" to your "SYSTEM.INI" into the section [WINNER.DRV] The entry "2ndbrd" used up to version 3.24 will no longer be used. The following combinations are supported: 1st board 2nd board ---------------------------------- VGA WINNER 2000PRO[/X] WINNER 1000ISA WINNER 2000PRO[/X] WINNER 2000PRO[/X] WINNER 2000PRO[/X] If you have got one combination of the ELSA WINNER boards shown above, you can use the special driver MULTIman to spread your desktop over two or more monitors, providing the advantage of a considerably larger workspace. More informations about that contains the file README.TXT on the disk "MULTIMAN" or in the corresponding directory on the ELSA CD. Known problems: This driver version does not support "DOS FULL SCREEN" using the parameter "board=1" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Caveats This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives hints on work arounds. 6.1 Network Installations Installing Windows system components in a networked environment is also possible with the ELSA installation program SETUP.EXE under Windows. (see 3.1 Installation of the ELSA Windows driver with SETUP.EXE) 6.2 Known Application Problems This section describes known problems with applications and (if possible) circumvents. - Several multimedia applications reports an error message as "You may encounter display performance problems, please contact the manufacturer of your video board to see if an update driver is available". If the CPU timing is decreased the animations are displayed much slower, but the error message does not occure. This is an internal bug of the multimedia application which computes the video performance of highspeed drivers incorrect on fast computer systems. - Aldus Freehand: Moving of a zoomed part of the image can cause bad output. - The AnimationPlayer uses sometimes wrong colors. This is not a driver problem. Instead you may switch off 'color cycling' in the options menu and the problem disappears. - Borland does not support S3 based video adapters as WINNER in the Turbo Debugger. After quit debugging Windows cannot be displayed correctly because a special DLL is missing. - There is a hidden flag in CorelDraw 3.0/4.0 which controls the use of graphic primitives (scanline or polygon based) to draw the image. Search for the 'CDrawConfig' section in CORELDRW.INI and expand it by the line 'UseClippingForFills=0'. After this change CorelDraw can paint their images much faster. - In CorelPhotoPaint the images are only black and white with 4 bpp / 16 colors. - Please don't start the Benchmark Hercules Speedy by using the function key. Use instead for "Control, Auto Run". - The screen saver ELSA POWERman works fine with ELSA WINNER drivers, but other drivers such as VGA.DRV do not support the POWERman. - ImageStar: Bad output when using 16M colors. - Lotus Freelance: Using the magnifying glass causes sometimes to bad output. - Lotus Organizer: For window sizes > 800x600 there is a colored rectangle at the bottom of the page. - The program MICROCOM Carbon Copy does not work with ELSA WINNER. - In Micrografx Designer 4.0 occures a problem after convert a presentation to an executable file (.EXE). Accessing this file causes a general protection fault in KRNL386.EXE with ELSA WINNER drivers and SVGA also. This is an error of Designer. - In the application Midisoft Studio 3.10 the output of notes and measures may be incorrect after installing the ELSA WINNER graphics board. Change the settings in the menu "View, Score View Settings". The application computes the correct length of measures automatically. - Application 'Norton Desktop for Windows' (NDW) VirScan hangs at 65% of memoryscan. This is due to an illegal memory access of VirScan to our board. The next release of NDW might probably have a switch to exclude specific memory areas. - Paintbrush: Flood fill sometimes doesn't work correctly. - PaintBrush cannot print with HiColor drivers (65000 colors) and True-Color drivers (16Mio colors). - With 16 color drivers PhotoStyler causes general protection faults. This is not a driver problem. - The introductions in Procomm Plus and QuarkXPress are incorrect or only in black/white with the driver for 16 colors. - Program Manager: If no virtual memory is installed switching from windowed DOS box to full screen causes probably loss of icons. - Data input in SPC Harvard Graphics is incorrect with small fonts. This is an application bug. - In WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows there are several problems in "view printing page" which are not caused by the drivers. - WordPerfect 6.0: If you encounter problems when shrinking document to less than 35%: Alter entries "xmm=" and "ymm=" in file SYSTEM.INI, section [Winner]: xmm=280 ymm=210 - PCI systems If system/chipset setup has an option BYTE MERGING, this option must not be enabled. 6.3 Hints to the version: - With this version 4.0 and the following versions no OS/2 seamless is supported. There is a special ELSA Windows drivers on the ELSA OS/2 driver disk. - WINNER 1000AVI: With this version no 4 bpp is supported. - WINNER 1000AVI: The WINman shows on the windows testscreen, with the graphicmode 640x480x16 bpp and refresh rates smaller than 105 Hz and with the graphicmode 800x600x16 bpp and refresh rates smaller than 68 Hz, the appearence of the mouse cursor too small and the half of the Windows-screen is not usuable. After restarting Windows with these modes everything is OK. With the standard testscreen there aren't any problems. - WINNER 1000TRIO, WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 1000PRO/X and WINNER 2000PRO/X: The graphics board gets an interrupt from the system bios. Sometimes this causes conflicts with other boards in the system (e.g. network). - It is important for the version 4.0 and all following versions that the WINNER graphics board is put in the upper memory of the system. This address range is calcualted automatically and normally there aren't any problems. There are PCI- and VL-systems, however, on which this calculation fails, because of an error in the motherboard. In this case the system will hang after displaying the Windows startup-logo or somewhere during your Windows session. You should modify the file SYSTEM.INI with an editor. Please enter the line VRAM-BASE=... in the section [WINNER]. With the following you can set the address of the WINNER graphics board in system memory. Examples: VRAM-BASE=0x04000000 VRAM-BASE=0x06000000 VRAM-BASE=0xFC000000 Please note that the last six digits of this number have to be equal to zero. - Using AutoCAD for Windows there might be a problem with the appearence of the buttons dependent on the monitor size and the choosen resolution. If the position of the buttons is incorrect please modify the values for "xmm=" and "ymm=" in the file SYSTEM.INI, section [Winner]: xmm=280 ymm=210 These changes have to be made after the usage of WINman, because this program overwrites these values. - In MS PowerPoint there might occur a general protection fault with special files in foil sort mode (8 bpp: 0006:1BF9, 16 bpp: 0006:1BEC, 32 bpp: 0006:1BDB). - Using MS WinWord with large documents there might be a problem in during display of screen shots (general protection fault with 8 bpp at address 0006:3832).
