Hello and welcome to version 1.6 of ¡dominó! Thanks for reading this README, and sorry it's been so long since I've updated ¡dominó!. I guess I should put the most important information right up top, so here it is: The official PalmOS database name of version 1.6 (and later) are (and will) be named "domino!" instead of "¡dominó!". This is the name you'll see in the application launcher. (It turns out that PalmOS databases are supposed to contain only ASCII characters.) So if you're upgrading from an earlier version, either delete "¡dominó!" manually or run "domino!" and it'll delete it for you. So that's the important stuff. The rest is merely interesting. :-) To the best of my knowledge, ¡dominó! will run under all flavors of PalmOS 2.0 (Personal and Professional PalmPilot) and 3.x (Palm III, V, VII, m100, Handspring, TRG, Sony, ...). It will *not* run under PalmOS 1.0 (Pilot 1000 and 5000). Rules and strategy tips can be found under the "Options"/"Opciones" menu. It's freeware, but if you've written a shareware program and would like to give me a free registration in exchange, that would be super. Have fun! Emilio Millán emillan@yahoo.com +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ DOMINO FAQs Q1: Where can I get a version of dominoes for the PC? A1: The one I know of is called Zapatero 100-0 and can be found at http://www.domino.com.mx/. Q2: Even though you say ¡dominó! is freeware, can I pay you something for it? A2: Nope, though it's swell of you to offer. I owe a great deal to the free-software community and this is my way of paying back at least part of that debt. (Heck--I used free software to write ¡dominó!) Q3: Do you speak Spanish? A3: Very badly, much to my shame. Feel free to write to me in Spanish, but I'll respond in English. Q4: Are you planning to do a Windows CE/Pocket PC version? A4: No. I don't enjoy programming Windows platforms so such a project doesn't appeal to me. Besides, I use Palm myself, as does 90% of the PDA market. Q5: Are you still developing ¡dominó!? A5: Yes, but slowly. This past year's been a hectic one, what with my looking for a new job and moving to Maine. I hope to be able to give it a bit more attnetion in the year to come. Q6: Where do you live? What is your heritage? A6: I now live in Maine and work for DeLorme Publishing, a mapping company. I am of Spanish heritage. My dad, who did the Spanish translation, is poet Rafael Millán. He was born in Spain but emigrated to the United States after the Spanish Civil War. Q7: I've written you with a suggestion and you replied and said it was a good one. Why haven't you implemented it? A7: Ummm, well, I'm getting to it. Among the things I'm seriously considering for future versions: o Texas-style scoring o adding games which use a boneyard o adding games which use a 9-9 set of dominoes o stronger computer players o a modification to the screen which displays the number of tiles held by the other players o ...and other things I can't remember at the moment +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ What's New in Version 1.6 (March 18, 2001) -- Fixed the way colors are specified so that it'll work on the Handspring Prism. -- Renamed the database (and ergo the name seen in the application launcher) from "¡dominó!" to "domino!". (Using non-ASCII characters in Palm database names is, I have learned, a Bad Thing.) -- Added a new Interface option: Spanish! What's New in Version 1.4 (March 1, 2000) -- Fixed that goof wherein a human-played tile could get put on the end of the played-tile chain backwards. -- If the player passes when he or she need not, a dialog box now pops up to make sure this is really what the player wants. -- Fixed a memory leak. -- Added support for PalmOS 3.5 and, what the heck, added a bit of color. -- Fixed a handful of bugs exposed by the PalmOS 3.5 debug ROMs and added a workaround for one PalmOS 3.5 bug. What's New in Version 1.2 (February 1, 2000) -- The Preferences dialog has been split into Gameplay Preferences and Interface Preferences to make room for more options. -- Domino tiles can now be in one of six styles--not just the one teeny-tiny style of version 1.0. (I'm sorry about that!) -- Games can now be played with two pairs of partners (you and a computer partner vs. two computer opponents). Also, games can be played to a set point target or a set hand target. -- An "autopass" feature has been added, as has a "show opponents hands at the end of a round" feature. -- Win-loss statistics are now kept. -- Fixed a bug wherein sometimes, if the game ended in a hand whose winner was decided by points, the wrong winner of the game would be declared. What's Not Changed in this Version -- Domino! is still freeware. Enjoy! Thanks for all the feedback on versions 1.0-1.4! Feel free to continue to write me with bug reports and/or suggestions. I can't guarantee I'll implement all suggestions, but I'll take all into serious consideration. (You can write me in Spanish if you prefer, but I'll respond in English.)
