Readme for dnoter Visit www.ruinedsoft.com/dnoter Current Version 3.0 software written by Steven Grafton ruined soft - www.ruinedsoft.com :: description :: ================================= This program allows you to effectively keep track of notes on your desktop as if they were post-it's. The program runs quietly in your system tray and you can start adding notes by double clicking on it. Notes maybe be repositioned, made transparent, resized, colored, locked, and hidden. Very light program (less than 100k). Just download, extract, and run. The program comes in two flavors. The installer version using SuperPiMP technology was made for those who don't mind a few extra kilobytes of download (35 or so) and is an easy to use interface. The exe only version is exactly the same and is just perfect if you know what you're doing with your computer. Very clean, effective way to keep track of random crap. Your notes are stored in the "notes" directory. They are rich text formatted (after the first line anyway), so you can open them up in Notepad to modify them if you really need. :: controls :: ================================= Right or double click on the icon in the system tray for the main menu. The show and unlock menus aren't supposed to have any submenus by default. A user would need to 'hide' or 'lock' a note before those menu items become accesible. The bring to front menu takes a non-hidden note and will put it into focus and bring it to the top of all current other windows open. The topmost menu allows you to set certain notes to be forced to be drawn ontop of other normal windows. When there is a check by a menu item, that note is topmost. Select it again to uncheck it and make it a regular note. Just imagine, a locked and topmost note will be exactly like a translucent stick note attached directly to your monitor screen! Right click on a note for a menu displaying note specific commands (double clicking a titlebar or edge also works to keep controls backward compatible with previous users). A note may be dragged around by right clicking and holding while moving the mouse. If snap to edges is enabled, this is where it will click to a side of the screen. Click on the close button of a note for a menu of various closing tasks. Your open notes and their states are automatically saved everytime the program exits, so you don't need to select "Save All" from the menu every time you quit. The notes' states are also loaded everytime the program starts back up, saving your work in progress. Save All is merely provided for people that have systems prone to harsh shutdowns... Setting an expiration on a note and then having the current clock meet that time will display a message saying your note has expired. The note will not be erased, but the reminder will be turned off. Set color changes the background color of a note. Set Font changes the font of the currently highlighted text, or sets future words from where the cursor is to use the selected font if no text was highlighted. :: requirements :: ================================= Windows 2000/XP 1 MB install space, + space for notes 2 MB RAM :: to install :: ================================= With Installer - Download and run the installer program. Follow the on screen directions. New installations may be installed directly over old ones, your notes should be preserved. Without Installer - Download, extract to any directory of your choosing and run the program. Double click on the icon in the tray or on the title bar of an open note for the commands. For greater ease, you can create a shortcut to the program and place it in your start up group under Programs->Startup in the start menu so the program will run every time you start up. :: to uninstall :: ================================= For some reason, it seems the uninstaller may not work if you select it using "Add/Remove Programs", so instead, run the uninstaller from the program group or the program's install directory. Or, if you don't have the uninstaller, simply delete the program directory to which dnoter was installed, delete the start menu program group, and delete the Programs/Startup/dnoter.lnk shortcut if you opted to have the program start up everytime windows does. :: bug reports :: ================================= Please send bug reports, errors, or other comments to dnoter@ruinedsoft.com :: updates :: ================================= 09 01 2002 version 3 readme updated always on top and bring to front menus editing functions added to note menus right click system tray icon fixed menu focus error snaps to edges of screen got rid of cancel disabled show and lock until used drag notes using right mouse button can now right click a note for properties 08 04 2002 version 2.5 help and documentation in distribution slider for visibility, updates dynamically as moved link to webpage loads old 2.0 and 1.0 notes as well fixed startup bug where note text remained unrefreshed notes start out initially smaller more win2000 bugs fixed upgraded to using richedit version 2.0+ note loading errors fixed close box and options added to notes questions multiple instances right clicking on notes works too 07 26 2002 "add note" now works in win2k (in case it didn't for your machine) 07 19 2002 second release, probably final (for real this time), unless I find I need more functionality or people have some really good sugguestions. runs on win xp and win 2k, haven't tested others yet, but probably not. installer/uninstaller download version some bugs were fixed now uses richedit fields instead of edit boxes background colors can be used expiration dates for notes can be set old notes are still compatible by replacing old exe with new one. title bar can be hidden Notes can have formatted text scrollbar acts properly now :: future possibilities :: ================================= windows 98 version? client window to manage them all? icons displaying status? locked exipration topmost countdown till expiration? shrink code by moving common tasks to functions?
