Drag select or deselect a set of vertices.
Holding down the Shift Key while dragging changes the selection marquee from a rectangle to a Lasso.
Holding down the Ctrl Key while dragging changes the selection marquee from a rectangle to a circle.
Double-click on the Selection Marquee Tool to toggle to the Deselection marquee.
