  • What is fw_GNUemacs?

fw_GNUemacs is GNU Emacs 19.30 from the Free Software Foundation. GNU Emacs is the extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time display editor. When run as an X client, Emacs can create multiple windows (frames to emacs) on your desktop, and this version can open frames on multiple DISPLAYs. Emacs is powerful enough to program applications in, and many applications come as part of the standard support library, including, but not limited to, the following:

In addition to the standard GNU Emacs distribution, the following additional pieces are included in this inst distribution:

GNU is an acronym for Gnu's Not Unix.

What's the difference between emacs and xemacs?

A tiny bit of history, probably somewhat garbled:

emacs is FSF's GNU emacs 19.30. xemacs is what used to be called lemacs, or Lucid emacs. It got developed from epoch, which was GNU emacs v18 with enhanced X interface capabilities. lemacs was developed because GNU was really behind in the development of emacs-19, and it ended up being sort of a test-bed for many features. For various reasons, it stuck around and continued to evolve. I'm far more familiar with FSF's emacs.
Many of the elisp library (.el) files and info files can be shared between the two versions. Sharing the compiled (.elc) elisp files may only work one-way.
