                    ANNOUNCING GVI 1.0 -- A "Graphical" vi

I am a vi/xwsh pack rat. Yes, I use vi for software development and
I inevitably end up with 5-10 xwsh's running vi covering my screen.
I considered emacs but I am set in my vi ways. To deal with this
flock of editing windows (and to play with ViewKit), I wrote gvi. gvi
is a modest graphical front end to the vi editor. By placing each vi
editing window on top of each other and using the ViewKit TabPanel,
one can easily select among editing sessions. Each vi editing window
has a tab (like a rolodex tab) associated with it. To select a
particular vi window, select the tab. In addition, files can be
opened or closed using menu items AND the last 15 recently opened
files can be quickly selected for editing.

gvi was originally written with me as the sole consumer. However,
seeing that others might find this program useful I have made the
software available. I consider the feature set to be very basic. As
with any editing program there is a whole swarm of creeping features
that could be added. I will happily add your suggestions to the gvi
feature list (and yes they will get attention). Subdirs are:

inst: inst-able images of the gvi software
         src: src plus man page

After the software is installed you can man gvi to get detailed
information (or look at src/gvi.man). Send problems, comments,
questions, praise, hugs, kisses to baron@sgi.com. And yes, after
basic functionality was established, I used gvi as my development
     editor for gvi.

Hope you find gvi useful. If you do, please send happy email. If you
think gvi "sucks dead bunnies through a bent straw", send me happy
email. In fact, send me happy email even if you don't know what an
editor is. One can NEVER get enough happy email.

                              Enjoy,

                          Baron Roberts
