Chapter 5: Network Security

This chapter contains the following sections:

• "Local Area Network Access" discusses security issues to consider when creating or connecting to a local area network.

• "Network Security and Firewalls" introduces issues concerned with how to build a "firewall," or barrier, between your local system or site and external, untrusted networks such as the Internet.

• "Hardware Configuration" summarizes network hardware design configurations from the point of view of security.

• "IRIX Configuration" describes the details of how to configure an IRIX host to serve as a firewall.

• "Internal Network Configuration" summarizes issues relating to configuring Sendmail and DNS on your firewall and internal network.

Note: This chapter assumes you already have taken measures to secure your host system(s) as described in Chapter 4.
