======================================= EUDORA PRO FOR WINDOWS, VERSION 4.2.2 ======================================= Eudora Pro 4.2 introduces new features, including a new search interface and field auto-completion, plus bug fixes. Version 4.2.2 contains some additional bug fixes that are not in version 4.2. This README provides information on the following topics: - Minimum Requirements - Installation - New Features - Notes Concerning Eudora Pro and: * Apple QuickTime and * Microsoft Internet Explorer - Security Note - Bug Reports - Requests for Features - License and Legal Information See Relnotes.txt for more detailed information on changes, bug fixes, and known issues. The reason for having both Readme.txt (this file) and Relnotes.txt is that a single text file containing all the information would be too large for Notepad to open on some systems. ---------------------- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ---------------------- To use Eudora Pro for Windows Version 4.2, you must have the following: - IBM PC or compatible. - Microsoft Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 or above. - WinSock 1.1 API compliant networking package. (Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0 come with this.) - An Internet e-mail account (POP or IMAP) with an Internet Service Provider or through a corporate network. - Access to your mail account via (1) a modem connection to your Internet Service Provider or (2) a direct Internet network connection. --------------- INSTALLATION --------------- To install Eudora Pro: 1. Exit any applications you are running. 2. Run the Setup program. 3. Read the Welcome screen, then click the Next button. 4. Read the Software License Agreement, and if you agree to the terms, click Yes. Once you've installed Eudora, a copy of the license agreement will be available in the file License.txt in your Eudora directory. 5. Pick the components you wish to install. 6. Specify a directory to install Eudora, then click Next. 7. Verify the settings, then click Next. 8. Eudora is installed in the destination directory. 9. It will ask if you want to place a shortcut to Eudora on your desktop. 10. We recommend that you look at the Readme.txt and Relnotes.txt files in the Eudora directory following installation. -------------------------------- NEW FEATURES IN EUDORA PRO 4.2 -------------------------------- * New, improved Search Under Edit/Find/Find Messages, you will find our new search, which has many improvements over the old Find. The hot key is Ctrl-F. The search lets you to define one to five search criteria; then you can have it either find the messages that match all of the criteria (in computer-ese, it "ANDs" the criteria together), or find the messages that match any of the criteria (it "ORs" the criteria together). There are new fields which you can specify, as well as new operators. You can also specify which mailboxes are to be searched. The result is a clickable and sortable list of all of the matching messages. - You can right-click on the resulting found items and perform the specified actions such as delete. - The fields should be self-explanatory, but Summary refers to the From: and Subject: fields, Age refers to the age (in days) of the message, and Personality refers to the personality associated with the message. Recall that Any recipient represents the To:, Cc:, and Bcc: fields. - The operators (or conjunctions) have a couple of new items. "contains word" accepts exactly one word. If you want more than word to be found, then you will have to specific another criteria. - "matches regexp" refers to a powerful tool called Regular Expressions. There are various implementations of Regular Expressions, but Eudora uses the POSIX implementation. Without going into too much detail, here are some symbols which are supported. Note that this operator is case-sensitive. . (period) represents any one character. [] (brackets) contain a set of characters from which a match can be made. It corresponds to one character in the search string. \ (backslash) is an escape character which means that the next character will not have a special meaning. * (asterisk) is a multiplier. It will match zero or more of the previous character. (Note that it's not a wildcard character as in file names.) ? (question mark) is a multiplier. It will match zero or one of the previous character. (Note that it's not a wildcard character as in file names.) + (plus) is a multiplier. It will match one or more of the previous character. {} (squiggly brackets) contain a number which specifies an exact number of the previous character. [^] (brackets containing caret and other characters) means any characters except the character(s) after the caret symbol in the brackets. ^ (caret) is the start of the line. $ (dollar) is the end of the line. \< represents the start of a word. \> represents the end of a word. [:alpha:] represents any alphabetic letter. [:digit:] represents any single-digit number. [:blank:] represents a space or tab. | (pipe) is OR. It requires that the joined expressions have parentheses around them. Examples: e.a matches eta, eda, e1a, but not Eta [eE].a matches eta and Eta E.*a matches Eudora, Etcetera, Ea ho+p matches hop, hoop, hoooop, but not hp etc\. matches etc. but not etc You can find further information on regular expressions on the web, for example at . Note: The old-style Find functionality is still available via Edit/Find/Find Text, with Ctrl-Shift-F as the keyboard shortcut. If the focus is in a mailbox summary (table of contents), Find Text will search through the summary information for that mailbox only. Otherwise, if an open message has the focus, Find Text will search that message. By contrast, the new Find Messages finds text in messages throughout selected mailboxes. * Filters also support Regular Expressions * "Speak" Filter Action You now have the option, when setting up a filter, to have Eudora audibly announce, or speak, the subject and/or the name of the sender whenever a message is filtered. (In the case of an outgoing filter, it will speak the name of the recipient rather than the sender.) Here's how to use this feature. When defining or editing a filter, just select Speak from any of the drop-down lists under Action. You'll see check boxes for what part or parts of the message you want to be spoken, and a drop-down list of the available voices. In order to use this feature, you need to have a sound card and a sound card device driver that's supported in Windows. You also need to install Microsoft's Speech Application Programming Interface (SAPI) and a SAPI-compliant text-to-speech engine. If you purchased Eudora Pro on a CD-ROM, installers for SAPI and Microsoft's text-to-speech engine are in the Extras folder on the CD-ROM; you need to run "Speech API Setup.exe", and then "Text To Speech Setup.exe", from the Extras folder. (If your Windows system doesn't support long file names on CD-ROMs, you'll instead need to run SpchAPI.exe, then MSTTSL.exe, from the Extras\Short folder on your CD-ROM.) If you don't have a Eudora Pro Email CD-ROM, you can obtain the installers you need in order to use the Speak option at . * Field Auto-completion You will find a new Option category under Tools-Options called Auto-completion. This feature allows you to type as little as one character, and the program will try to help you finish the field. This feature is implemented in the To:, Cc:, and Bcc: fields of the composition window, as well as the Directory Services Query field. If you have more than one match, then it will provide a drop-down list. You can use your mouse or arrow keys to select an item from the list. - Note that if you have nicknames, then you might already have some names in the list. There is a different icon to distinguish between items in your address book and those that you had typed. * Directory Services History List As mentioned above, this history list can also be brought up by starting to type a query. You can also click on the down arrow (triangle) to get a list. * Automatic spell-check There is a new option under Tools-Options-Spell Checking called Check spelling automatically as you type. With this enabled, it will automatically spell check your words after you type a space after it. If a word is misspelled, Eudora will put a red double underline under the word. If you want to correct it, you can right-click on the word and select from the options there. * Reply with selected text If you select text from the preview pane or an opened received message and then click on Reply/Reply All, then it will quote only the text that you had selected in your reply. * Personality selection If you have more than one personality set up, then you can change the personality being used by clicking on the From button which gives you a list to choose from. * Using IMAP offline IMAP mailboxes are still accessible even though you are not currently connected to the server. You are limited to what you have already downloaded. * Format=flowed >>>If you've ever been perplexed by email messages that look like this, >>>with long lines alternating with shorter, stubbier ones like this one, >>>then you'll appreciate this feature. Whenever Eudora Pro 4.2 sends a plain text message (Text/Plain, in the language of email standards), it sends an additional parameter, format=flowed, that will allow the message to appear properly formatted when it's read on the receiving end, regardless of how wide or narrow a window it's displayed in. In order for this to happen, the email client program on the receiving end needs to be one that understands the format=flowed parameter. Eudora Pro 4.2 is one, of course, but there will most likely be others. If the receiving program doesn't understand format=flowed, it will ignore that parameter and simply display the message the same way it always would have. When you reply to a plain text message received from Eudora Pro 4.2, you will initially be given an excerpt bar to the left of the text. You can still adjust the width of the window and see the original text adjust accordingly. This feature is used only when viewing messages and composing replies/forwards. Note that a plain-text original message with a plain-text reply will be sent out as plain-text (the excerpt bar gets converted). Here is some more detailed information on format=flowed: Eudora Pro 4.2 implements what we hope and believe will be a new Internet standard for sending text, format=flowed. This new standard lets you send text with returns only at the ends of paragraphs, which is much more convenient for reading on small or unconventional displays, as well as being easier to handle when quoting, trimming, etc. However, unlike styled text (e.g., enriched or HTML), format=flowed is not unpleasant for users with simple mailers. The way format=flowed works is by sending your mail wrapped and with normal quote characters (>'s), just like before. The only difference is that whenever Eudora wraps your text, it adds a single space to the end of the line. This allows Eudora (or other smart mailers) to reconstruct the original text exactly, taking out all the line breaks that were added, and presenting legible mail to the reader, no matter how wide or narrow the window is. A simple mailer won't know how to do this, of course, but that's OK; the only difference will be a single space added on the end of each wrapped line, which will disturb no one. Along with format=flowed comes increased use of excerpt bars in Eudora. The reason we use excerpt bars with format=flowed text is that the text rewraps itself "on the fly" to your window width, and inserting and removing '>' characters would be very slow and clumsy in such a dynamic environment. When your mail is sent, your mail is wrapped and the excerpt bars are converted back into '>' characters for transmission, so that even if your recipient has a simple mailer, your mail will look fine. If you want to see a full description of the format=flowed proposed standard, it's available at (the 06 could change to 07 or higher if there are further revisions). It is expected to advance to the Internet RFC (Request For Comments) stage shortly, but the RFC number isn't available as of this writing. * Esoteric Settings plugin As a default, this plugin is not available, but you can enable it by copying Esoteric.epi from your Extrastuff subdirectory into your main Eudora directory. This will add some additional categories to the Tools/Options dialog, allowing you to configure some additional aspects of Eudora's operation. ------------------------------------- NOTES CONCERNING EUDORA PRO AND: * APPLE QUICKTIME * MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER ------------------------------------- Eudora's standard message viewer supports basic HTML, such as text formatting and inline images. Installing QuickTime adds support to the standard viewer for inline display of a wider range of image (picture) formats. Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), version 4.0 or above, adds an additional message viewer (hereinafter, the Microsoft viewer) to Eudora that can accurately display just about any HTML message you might receive. You can find installers for QuickTime 3.0.2 and IE 4.01 Service Pack 1 (an updated version of IE 4.01) in the Extras folders of the Eudora Pro CD-ROM; they're called "Quick Time 3 Setup.exe" and "Internet Explorer 4 Setup.exe", respectively. If your Windows system doesn't support long file names on CD-ROM drives, you'll instead need to launch QTime3.exe and/or IE4.exe from the Extras\Short folder on the CD-ROM. If you don't have the CD-ROM, you can find the installers on the Eudora web site at . * Why should I care about displaying HTML messages? HTML messages (email messages that use HTML, the language of web pages) are becoming more and more common. The latest web browsers allow a web page to be sent as an HTML message. If someone sends you an HTML message that uses advanced formatting such as tables, then to see it as it was intended you need to tell Eudora to use the Microsoft viewer instead of its standard message viewer. * If Eudora has two viewers, how will I tell it which one to use? Just check or uncheck the "Use Microsoft's viewer" checkbox in the Viewing Mail panel of the Options dialog, under the Tools menu in Eudora. The checkbox is checked by default if IE 4.0 or higher is on your system. If IE 3.0 or higher is not on your system, the checkbox is dimmed and you can use only the standard viewer; you can, however, enhance it with QuickTime as described below. * What's the impact of installing QuickTime? It'll take about a minute and use 6 megabytes of disk space. It enhances the standard (non-Microsoft) viewer by allowing it to display images in a wider range of formats. It has no effect when "Use Microsoft's viewer" is selected. * What's the impact of installing IE 4.0 or higher? If you install IE 4.0 via the Eudora installer, it'll take up to 10 minutes, depending on the speed of your computer, and consume about 35 megabytes of disk space. It will not convert your desktop to the "active" state where single-clicking on an icon opens it, and it will not make IE 4.0 your default web browser unless your current default browser is an earlier version of IE. The specific viewing capabilities that you gain in Eudora are listed below. * What if I already have Internet Explorer? If you already have IE 4.0 or above on your system, Eudora will take advantage of it automatically, so there's no need to have the Eudora installer reinstall it. If you already have IE 3.0 on your system, you have two choices: 1. You can leave it alone, in which case Eudora will use IE 3.0 if you choose "Use Microsoft's viewer" in Eudora's Options dialog. However, this doesn't provide all the functionality you get with the IE 4.0 viewer (or even the standard viewer) - see the details below. 2. You can upgrade to IE 4.0 via the Eudora installer. This will upgrade your IE 3.0 to version 4.0 (on Windows 95, this won't take effect until after you reboot). You won't lose any functionality, and all your IE settings and preferences will be preserved. If you have aİversion of IE earlier than 3.0 on your system, installing IE 4.0 will not affect it. However, you must have IE 3.0 or above in order for the "Use Microsoft's viewer" option to take effect. * What does Eudora's standard viewer support? + Bold, italic, and underlined text + Different font faces, sizes, and colors + Fixed-width text + Left and right justification and centering + Multiple indentation levels + Bulleted lists + Hyperlinks (clicking on a URL launches your browser and takes you to a web page) + Horizontal ruling lines + Inline display of BMP images and some JPEG images * What does QuickTime add to the standard viewer? + Inline display of a wider variety of images, including the full set of JPEG formats, PNG, GIF, TIFF, Macintosh PICT, etc. * What does the Microsoft viewer do that the standard one doesn't? + Displays GIF, PNG and a wider variety of JPEG images inline + Automatic inline display of images from web sites + Numbered lists + Tables and forms + International character sets + Java applets, JavaScript, and ActiveX controls + Dynamic HTML (not if you're using IE 3.0) + Other embedded objects (audio, video) + Unlike QuickTime, it doesn't display Macintosh PICT images * What DON'T I get in Eudora if I use IE 3.0 instead of IE 4.0? + Dynamic HTML + Editing of received messages + Running Eudora plug-ins (such as text translators) on received messages If you're using IE 3.0, you can still edit received messages, and run Eudora plug-ins on them, provided you first switch to the standard viewer by unchecking "Use Microsoft's viewer" in the Options dialog. * What does inline image support mean? This means that if there's a picture embedded in the middle of a message, it'll display that way. Otherwise, the picture will be an attachment and will display in a separate window when you click on it. --------------- SECURITY NOTE --------------- Recent email viruses, such as the notorious "Melissa", have heightened many people's awareness of the need to be careful with email. For maximum protection, we recommend the following: 1. Change your Eudora attachment directory to something other than the default. 2. Disable JavaScript in your web browser. 3. Leave "(Warn me when I) Launch a program from a message" checked in Tools/Options/Extra Warnings. 4. Leave "Allow executables in HTML content" unchecked in Tools/Options/Viewing Mail. Consult for additional information, including instructions for changing your Eudora attachment directory. ------------- BUG REPORTS ------------- If you experience something you think might be a bug in Eudora, please report it by sending a message to win-eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com. Describe what you did, what happened, what version of Eudora you have, any error messages Eudora gave (the numbers in parentheses ( ) are especially important), what kind of computer you have, which operating system you're using, and anything else you think might be relevant. An easy way of incorporating your system information is to select Help/Insert System Configuration while composing your message in Eudora.
