386MAX and Microsoft Windows 95 This document is intended for use with 386MAX or BlueMAX version 7. You should not use these instructions if you are using version 8 of Qualitas MAX. We suggest you upgrade to Qualitas MAX 8 for a complete interface and technology upgrade for Windows 95. All applications, both MS DOS and Windows, benefit from having more conventional memory available. 386MAX provides more memory for applications in DOS and in Windows by making the most of your system for each environment. As a Windows Development Partner, Qualitas has worked closely with Microsoft for years to ensure that 386MAX enhances the Windows environment reliably. Version 7.0 of 386MAX (and later 7.xx versions) works with Windows 95. Version 7.02, however, has incorporated specific changes to ensure maximum compatibility. We recommend that you download this version if you want to use version 7 of 386MAX with Windows 95. During installation, if Windows 95 encounters a version of 386MAX prior to the current shipping version (version 7.02), it automatically deactivates the ExtraDOS feature by removing these lines from your CONFIG.SYS file. device=c:\386max\extrados.max pro=c:\386max\extrados.pro install=c:\386max\extrados.max If you have occasion to rerun Maximize, the above lines are reinstated into your CONFIG.SYS file, and can cause conflicts when booting into Windows 95. Updating your 386MAX version to 7.02 ensures that this conflict will not occur. After updating your version of 386MAX to 7.02, here's how to run Maximize: * Press F4 to exit Windows and restart your system. In the Windows box titled Shut down Windows, click on the second available option (restart the computer) and then on the YES button. * When the system restarts, press F8 when you see the Starting Windows 95 message. The MS Windows 95 Startup menu appears. Choose Command prompt only from the menu and press enter. * At the command prompt that follows, go to the 386MAX directory (cd 386MAX) and type Maximize. Either mode of Maximize (quick or full) runs to completion before restarting Windows. During Maximize, the Starting Windows 95 screen appears, but Windows does not actually load until Maximize completes processing of your configuration files. If you wish, you may observe the process by hitting the escape key to remove the Windows 95 display page each time it appears. When Maximize completes, Windows restarts automatically and you are returned to your Windows desktop. If you run Maximize with a version other than 7.02 and Windows 95 fails to start, use the F8 key as described above when restarting your system to get to the command prompt. Upate your 386MAX files to the proper version and then run Maximize as described above. You may download version 7.02 of 386MAX from our Internet FTP site. If you currently have version 7.00 of 386MAX, download M700702.EXE. If you have version 7.01 of 386MAX, get M701702.EXE. Internet ftp://ftp.qualitas.com
