Troubleshooting DOSMAX Microsoft Windows is a flexible environment. It supports both DOS and Windows applications. Running DOS applications under Windows comes at a cost, though. Windows has its own overhead, and as a result less DOS memory is available in a DOS window (a "DOS session") than if you were running the DOS program from outside of Windows. Using DOSMAX, you can have up to 736 KB DOS memory, almost 100 KB more than with a normal DOS window. More memory means that most DOS applications run faster and more reliably in a DOSMAX session than anywhere else. The most important thing to remember is that you can only run text mode applications under DOSMAX. DOSMAX works in both Windows 3.1x and in Windows 95. Occasionally, you may find that DOSMAX for Windows does not work as expected. DOSMAX for Windows won't work under the following circumstances. * If there is software loaded at the top of conventional memory. Most resident programs load into the lowest address memory available. If the software loads into the top of low DOS memory, DOSMAX for Windows won't work. Though disk controller sofware is the most common software that uses memory at the top of low DOS, CD ROM device drivers sometimes configure a buffer in this area as well. Certain viruses have also been known to attach themselves to this area of memory. * If your Qualitas MAX profile includes the option "NOXBIOS" (meaning that Qualitas MAX is not relocating the extended BIOS into high DOS), DOSMAX is disabled. The extended BIOS normally resides at the top of conventional memory. * If you have a system with less than 640 KB base memory. While Qualitas MAX backfills this memory to 640 KB, these systems aren't compatible with Windows. If none of the above situations apply and you're still having problems with DOSMAX for Windows, try the following steps. * Exit Windows. Add "DOSMAXMono=OFF" to the [Qualitas] section of SYSTEM.INI. Add the line [and the section if it doesn't exist]. Restart Windows and retry DOSMAX. * Exit Windows. Edit your 386MAX.PRO file and comment out (using a semicolon) the "VGASWAP" and "USE=B000-B800" options. Rerun Maximize and see if DOSMAX works properly. * If you're not using the standard VGA drivers that come with Windows, check to see that you have the most current version of your video drivers. Also try the standard VGA drivers that come with Windows. See your Windows documentation for more details.
