Tutorial 15 - Filling shapes

In this tutorial you will learn to
  •    define fill boundaries for filling
  •    hatching shapes with islands
  •    fill complex shapes
RiscCAD has a very versatile and powerful fill tool which allows any shape to be filled with either a standard line hatch or with a more complex pattern fill.

  Selecting the boundary

Any area you want to fill must have a boundary defined and grouped. This boundary group can, and often will, include objects which are already on the drawing. Extra objects may be required to close the area, or to make the boundary the required shape. All the template drawings supplied have a layer called Hatch boundary defined for creating hatch boundary objects which are not required on the finished drawing. Only lines, circles and arcs are considered when hatching. Other objects such as text or dimensions will be ignored and hatched over if they lie within a boundary group. To hatch area 1 and area 2 both areas require separate boundaries. The top and bottom horizontal lines cannot be constructed as single lines. Both of these must be split into three lines as shown (the gaps have been shown for clarity).

Only one group can be hatched at a time. To hatch the shape above the four lines making Area 1 must be selected, grouped and hatched. This is then repeated for Area 2

  Hatching around islands

The Area fill tool can cope with islands anywhere within the boundary. Islands may consist of simple circles, or more complex shapes. Any islands which need to be hatched around must be included within the boundary group. The circle must form part of the boundary group selected for area 1. Likewise, the inner rectangle inside area 2 must be grouped along with the outer boundary.

Note that any level of grouping can be used. In the above example, the four lines bounding area1 were already grouped, with the circle being selected and the result grouped again. The result of these groups is shown on the right.

  Islands within islands

Islands can lie within other islands. In this situation, the result depends on the objects grouped in the hatch boundary. This is shown below.

I the first example the inner circle is not included within the boundary group, so the hatch lines are drawn as in the previous example with the inner circle not being hatched. If the inner group is included in the boundary group, then the inner circle is hatched as well as the outer rectangle as in the third example.

Any boundary that lies within the area of a boundary group which is hatched, but is not included within the group, will be hatched over, as shown. In the fourth example, the four small circles were not included in the boundary group.

  Filling complex shapes

The boundary required to fill complex shapes will depend very much on the shape in question. Consider the example below, which is part of the Demo10 drawing.

To fill the area indicated all the boundary objects must be selected and must form an enclosed boundary. For complex shapes like this it is recommended that the boundary is traced onto a separate layer using End snap, as was done in this case. If you load the drawing and turn on layer Hatch boundary you will see the yellow boundary created to hatch the area. Although most of the original objects could have been used to form the hatch boundary the vertical lines which connect the door arc to the door frame could not, as they are drawn past the brickwork in the original drawing. If these lines had been selected then part of the area would not have been hatched.
