RISC World

Disc World

David Bradforth and Aaron Timbrell on this months DISCWorld

This months DISCWorld roundup

Welcome to Disc World, the section of RISC World that gives you the complete low down on the software directory of the CD. This issue we have another corking collection for you. The latest PD and Shareware software, new games and so much more.

DTP

This month Paul Webb uncovers some PostScript mysteries, as well as showing us how to use PSUtils. So in true RISCWorld tradition we have included PSUtils on the CD, as well as GhostScript, a full PostScript compatible interpreter, and to be honest a worthy competitor to RISC Script.

Games World

The RISC OS games scene seems to be picking up a little speed at last, with the release of Desktop Repton and Descent 2. As well as this we have some older games getting released as freeware, including BotKiller2 and Burn Out. Of course we have included both of these in the GamesWorld section of the software directory.

RISCWorld inlays

A complete set of RISCWorld inlays, from Volume 1 Issue 1, up to Volume 2 Issue 3, all in Ovation PRO format.

MIDIWorks

This excellent MIDI sequencer used to be supplied by Oregan developments, it has now been made available by the original author for free, so of course its on RISCWorld as well.

PD

Paul Brett has been busy finding the latest PD software releases. New versions of old favourites, including a new and most welcome version of ZIP 2000, fight for space with new releases such as Guardian, a port of the old BBC title of the same name.

PowerBase

This issue Derek Haslam starts a series on using PowerBase, and so we have included a copy on the CD. If you have never used this shareware database you may well be surprised at its speed and power, indeed it puts many commercial offerings to shame.

Top 25

This issues Top 25 is all about add-ons for RISC OS, programs that improve functionality, add new features and make RISC OS even nicer to work with. This really is an essential collection. For more details check out the Top 25 article, and of course the help files supplied with each program.

The Complete DiscWorld list

So in alphabetical order this months DiscWorld contains:

  • BEGINPRG - The examples from the BASIC programming series.
  • GAMESWORLD - The latest PD games releases for RISC OS.
  • INLAYS - RISCWorld inlays in OvationPRO format.
  • MIDIWORKS - Complete MIDI sequencer.
  • PD - Paul Bretts PD archive, with a complete ARM software development suite.
  • POWERBASE - The shareware database system.
  • TOP25 - All the software from this issues Top 25 article.

Utilities

This CD-ROM contains a number of utilities and pieces of software to accompany the articles in the magazine. The magazine now uses GIF and JPEG images rather than having two versions, one with Sprites and one with GIF. The magazine can be found in the HTML directory from the root of the CD.

There are three utilities to help you read this disc (RISC OS users only). These can be found hidden inside the !RiscWorld application in the UTILITIES directory (The !RiscWorld application automatically uses these utilities if they are required):

  • A file-only copy of Fresco, to display the HTML. This will only run if you don't already have a copy of Fresco installed, so that it won't overwrite your cache.
  • ArcFS, which can be used to read some of the archived software on the disc.
  • SparkPlug, an alternative de-archiver which can also read Zip files.

Usenet archive

Also included on the disc is an archive of the comp.sys.acorn.* newsgroups since early October 2001. These are stored in a special read-only version of Messenger Pro which will allow you to view the messages, but nothing more complicated. The archive is presented 'as is', and RISC World doesn't make any guarantee about the usefulness, relevance or acceptability of any information contained in it.
