The following statement is NOT intended to be inflamatory, accusatory or in any other way derogatory to any individual or group of individuals. It is intended as an ADVISORY STATEMENT on behalf of Dave Parsons (Orc) and myself (as representative of the Citadel:K2NE development group). ----------------------------------- To : All Citadel Software Developers From: Vince Quaresima on behalf of Citadel:K2NE Development and Dave Parsons (Orc) Date: Tue, April 4, 1989 at 3:00 pm Subj: Network message Field designators ----------------------------------- During the early part of 1989, a controversy arose regarding conflicting usage of certain field designators in the Citadel networking scheme. It is not the purpose of this announcement to examine the cause of controversy or to take a position thereon. However, as a result of that controversy the following has been MUTUALLY ACCEPTED by the Citadel:K2NE development group, and by Dave Parsons ("Orc") on behalf of his development of STadel and its derivative software ports and variations: 1) For the purposes of message processing and inter-system networking, the header designators "W", "X", and "Y" are henceforth to be regarded as "Citadel:K2NE reserved, for net mail routing purposes". 2) For similar reasons, the header designators "I", "J", "Z" and "#" are henceforth to be regarded as "STadel reserved." 3) The Citadel:K2NE software has been adjusted to recognize the "W", "X" and "Y" headers only when performing functions specific to Citadel:K2NE Net_Switch and FlashMail routing operations and will NOT recognize or utilize these fields for ordinary room-sharing functions. Beginning with Citadel:K2NE V5.0, the Citadel:K2NE development group agrees that all released runtime code shall support this modification. This information REPLACES and SUPERCEDES any prior announcement regarding message field-header usage via Citadel:K2NE, in particular the release announcement of July 25, 1988 in which the initial field designators were publicly defined and reserved. Please append or integrate this announcement to/with any relevant "NetHack" files you may be maintaining. We request that this information be included with any documentation being maintained by any Citadel developer whose software is network compatible with CitaNet (Citadel:K2NE), STadelNet (STadel, STadel-PC, STadel-Amiga), and C86Net (Citadel-86). As these three networking systems are essentially compatible with each other, and as it is our goal to maintain such compatibility in the interest of all users of these respective system types, we encourage and request all Citadel developers to cooperate through recognition of the reserved nature of these field designators and their functions. Your cooperation in this matter is gratefully appreciated.
