A Resource About Spasmodic Torticollis ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Over the past several weeks, I have found several questions about "spasmodic torticollis" in my mail. This is a condition in which the muscles of the neck contract involuntarily, twisting the neck and position of the head into abnormal attitudes, and producing abnormal movements. This is one of a group of disorders known as "focal dystonias" (involuntary muscle spasms) and not to be confused with the run of the mill "stiff necks". In researching the condition, I discovered fine patient education brochure from the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1976 by the Belzberg family of Canada after a family member was found to have generalized torsion dystonia. The Foundation now is an organization of people with dystonia, and their families friends and supporters. You may obtain the booklet "Spasmodic Torticollis", by sending your request with a stamped self addressed envelope to DYSTONIA, 8383 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills, CA 90211 and mentioning that you read about the booklet in Dr. Bruckheim's medical column. ---------------- The material contained here is "FOR INFORMATION ONLY" and should not replace the counsel and advice of your personal physician.
