     There is an old rule in medicine, more like a superstition I guess, that
unusual cases usually come in "threes", and that once you have diagnosed a
rare disease, be especially cautious, for two more are just around the corner.
Somehow my mail also seems to attract questions in groups, with many of you
requesting information on the same subject at just about the same time.  This
week the focus has been on problems of the eyes.  With that in mind, I have
researched a new booklet for you on another frequently asked question, this
one provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  It is
called "Age-Related Macular Degeneration" and you can obtain your free copy by
sending a stamped, self-addressed business size envelope with your request to
the National Eye Institute, Building 31, Room 6A32, Bethesda, Maryland 20892.
The booklet, in question and answer form contains a good diagram that will
help you understand the information contained in the booklet as well as the
answer to today's question.
