A Resource About Crisis Intervention ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Perhaps it is just another subject that gets swept under the rug, because it is ugly and frightening, but the estimated 3 to 4 million women a year that are the victims of domestic violence are certainly due all the help that society can put at their service. But caught in the trap of their own love for the men they live with, they are beaten and degraded, and find that their own homes provide them neither safety nor comfort. Without information and counsel, they don't know where to turn, and may even fear that a telephone number called in desperation may appear on their phone bill, and provoke another violent episode. But here is a hotline number that offers real hope, and important help. It is the National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-333-SAFE. I knew it was a valuable resource when I called the number, and after but a short wait, was greeted by a friendly voice asking "Are you safe?" The counselor was prepared to offer information and referral to a shelter, advocacy and crisis intervention. If you need such a friend, and the helping hand that can lead you out of an unbearable situation with the location of one of the more than 1200 Domestic Violence Shelters nationwide, or just advice, this is the number for you. They are also equipped with a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) at 1 800-873-6363. These numbers are manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide the support and understanding you may need. ---------------- The material contained here is "FOR INFORMATION ONLY" and should not replace the counsel and advice of your personal physician.
