A Resource About Child Speech Disorder

     Do you know if your child is suffering from a speech or language
disorder?  By the age of 5, with one or two exceptions a child should be able
to make all speech sounds correctly.  Delayed speech means that some speech
sounds are not made correctly at the expected age.  Delayed language means
that words or sentences are not understood or used at the expected age.  A
child who is not using words by 1 1/2 or 2 years of age or is not able to
speak in short sentences by 2-3 years of age may have a language delay.  You
can learn more about this subject by writing to the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Dept.  AB, 10801 Rockville Pike,
Rockville, Maryland 20852 and requesting their illustrated booklet "How Does
Your Child Hear and Talk" which features a multicolored chart showing the
stages of communication from birth to age 5.  Be sure to enclose a stamped
self addressed business envelope with your request, which should be mailed
DIRECTLY to the above address.  Several other publications about communication
disorders are available from ASHA and are listed on the back of this brochure.
