A Resource About Genital Self-Examinations

     Each year about 12 million new cases of sexually treated diseases (STD)
are diagnosed in the United States.  Experts say that millions more go
unrecognized, undiagnosed and untreated.  Although many Americans are fearful
of STDs, they often do not have the understanding and knowledge about these
diseases that permit them to obtain medical care as rapidly as they should.  A
new national education campaign that features the genital self-examination
(GSE) has been launched by four of the nations leading health associations in
cooperation with Burroughs Wellcome Corporation; The American Academy of
Family Physicians, American College of General Practitioners in Osteopathic
Medicine and Surgery, The American Academy of Dermatology, and the American
Social Health Association.  They invite you to call 1-800-234-1124 to obtain
your copy of the  "The Genital Self-examination (GSE) Guide" or you may
forward your request to:  GSE, P.O. Box 4088, Woburn, Mass. 01888-4088.  The
booklet has been designed to teach you how to check for the signs of STDs such
as chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, genital warts and syphilis.
Instructions for both men and women are included.  While many different STDs
have similar appearances, this information will help you become aware of any
problems at an early stage of any infection, and seek the medical help for
diagnosis and treatment that avoid the serious complications that may arise
when these diseases go untreated.
