File Types

Opera is installed with a default setup for handling files transferred to your computer.

To add your own file types:

  1. Click
  2. Enter the correctly spelled MIME string you wish to set up
  3. Enter a list of comma-separated file extensions to associate with the file type, for example "jpeg, jpg, jpe"
  4. Select action Opera should take
Action Explanation
Show download dialog Display multiple choice dialog on how to handle file
Open with Opera Opera can show text, markup languages, and images
Save to disk
  • Opera can open transferred files automatically
  • You can specify a download location for files of a particular type, for example C:\My Documents\Zip files for ZIP files
Open with default application Let your operating system (Windows) decide which program to use when opening files of file type
Open with other application Use a different application than the one your operating system is set to use by default
Use plug-in Use a plug-in to view the file

Some servers may be incorrectly set up and tell you that a movie file is a plain text file. Try setting Opera to identify unreliable types by file extension to work around this.

Tip: Type in the Quickfind field to find the type you want to edit

Note: Be careful when editing file types. Opera depends on certain types in order to work properly.
