Glossary

The main terms used in IMxVCD/DVD are explained here.

Authoring
The sequence of operations undertaken to create a disc is known as "Authoring".

BGM
BGM is an abbreviation of Background Music.

Contents
Digital files such as movies, still images and sound are known as "Contents".

Disc image
A file structure turned into an image is known as a "Disc image". A file structure turned into an image that complies with the Video CD Ver2.0 standard is known as a "Video CD image", and a file structure turned into an image that complies with the DVD standard is known as a "DVD image".

DVD-Video
This is a read-only DVD disc recorded in MPEG-2 format. It will playback on any player supporting DVD-Video.

PAL: 720x576, 352x576, 352x288
Frames per second NTSC: 29.97 frames
PAL: 25 frames
Audio Format PCM

Menu

The screen that is displayed when a disc is played back is known as a "Menu".

Motion Menu
A Menu with movement is known as a "Motion Menu".

NTSC
NTSC is a Video/TV format generally used in Japan and U.S.A., etc. It has 525 scanning lines and displays 29.97 frames per second.

PAL
NTSC is a Video/TV format generally used in Europe and China, etc. It has 625 scanning lines and displays 25 frames per second.

Project
The content being authored is known as the "Project".

Thumbnail
A miniature image is known as a "Thumbnail".It is difficult to distinguish a file from the file name alone, however displaying miniature images (Thumbnails) allows you do distinguish files to a certain degree. A Thumbnail is similar to a Windows "Shortcut" or a Macintosh "Alias".

Title, Title button
A button that plays back a movie positioned on the Menu is known as a "Title" or "Title button".

Video CD
This is a read-only CD-ROM disc recorded in MPEG-1 format. It will playback on any player supporting Video CD.

Video disc
In IMxVCD/DVD, Video CDs and DVD-Videos are generically referred to as "Video discs". They are also referred to simply as "Discs".
