This zip file contains News for Windows NT. News for Windows NT is a 32-bit Internet newsreader and runs on Windows NT 3.51 or later and Windows 95. It will not run under Win32s.

This release may be freely copied and distributed world-wide. If you do reproduce or distribute this material, all the files included in this zip file must be reproduced in their original form.

Versions in this release:

• News for Windows NT X1.0-80 for Intel
• News for Windows NT X1.0-72 for Alpha

Installation

Simply unzip the .zip file and run the included .exe file.

Configuration

Before posting articles, you should invoke the Tools->Options dialog and enter your personal data.

By default, News will keep all the configuration information in the Registery database. If you want to use an external .newsrc file to store information about your subscribed newsgroups, select "Tools->Options->General" and change the settings. Make sure to make a backup copy of your existing .newsrc file before doing this!

X1.0-80

• The columns in the article list window can now be customized and the settings will be saved and restored.

X1.0-79

• The article window now correctly scrolls past the header lines and positions the article body correctly even if some of the header lines was forced to wrap.
• Fixed a minor memory leak.

X1.0-78

• Word wrap is now enabled in the article read and create windows.
• News for Windows NT can now be invoked from Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 using the "Read Newsgroups" command. You will however get an error message from the Microsoft Internet Explorer, but News for Windows NT will be started.
• The XOVER command is now used to get article data if your NNTP server supports XOVER. It will also work if your server lacks this support. Using XOVER seems to be a bit faster in most cases.

X1.0-77

• Create Shortcut on the File menu allows to create shortcuts to newsgroups on your desktop. This requires Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 95.
• An new menu item on the Help menu will invoke your Web brower and open http://www.ksedb.no/NTNews. This makes it easy for you to get new versions and updated information about News for Windows NT. This requires Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 95.

• A bug causing the Stop Transfer command to be inactive while transfering data is fixed.
• Added a new Article Cancel command to cancel articles you have written after they have been posted.
• Fixed most cases of a bug causing the display of popup menus to loop.

• Improved multiple UUdecode (should now ignore most garbage between the encoded lines).

• New menu item "Article->Retrive Articles" enables you to retrieve a set of selected articles from the server and then read them without waiting for each article to be retrieved. You may also use this to read articles offline.
• Fixed problem with wait cursor being enabled incorrectly.
• Fixed UUencode/UUdecode bug with multinational characters.

• The signature edit control now correctly accepts the return key to enter multiple lines. - Articles that are saved to a text file or UUdecoded are now being marked as read even if you don't actually read the articles into the read window.

• The font used in the Signature edit control is set to your customized font.
• The filename when saving articles now defaults to "N.txt" where N is the article number of the first selected article.
• The UUdecode code is more rebust and will recognize and ignore lines containing various known comment strings inserted by different UUencode packages.
• Bug causing two "Message sent successfully" messages after sending SMTP mail and potentially causing a crash is fixed.

• UUdecode of multiple selected articles (Current restriction: The selected articles *must* be in correct order 1/N..N/N to produce the desired result).

• New user interface for entering user specific information (Email Address, Full Name, Organization, Reply To and Signature).
• New Signature suppport - Added support for News Server Authorization in the user interface (the information is currently not sent to the server).

• New prototype of "Article Filters" is included. You will not be able to save the filters in this realease and the matching is very primitive. Newsgroup has to match exact and the header must be a column in the view and is matched as a substring.

• Use a threshold of 5% change for automatic column width adjustment to avoid many small adjustments.
• Implemented prototype dialog for adding an "Article Filter" (see "Add Filter..." on the popup menu while in an open newsgroup.

• Added automatic adjustment of header columns in the article list view. This is based on the mean and standard deviation of the width of the headers that have been shown in the list. This algorithm is currently tuned so approxemately 90% of the headers should be fully visible. - Implemented more customizeable header features (customization of the headers is not saved in this release).
• Show clock cursor while saving configuration and Newsrc data.
