Layout of TUCOWS

These pages represent my best efforts in helping Internet users keep current on the latest, greatest winsock applications. Before continuing, please read TUCOWS copyright and disclaimer notices. If you need help, or have any questions, please e-mail me at tucows@tucows.com Please note that this site covers only Internet applications for Windows 3.x and Windows 95 users. If you are looking for Macintosh Internet applications, I have provided a link to such a site.

You ask, why TUCOWS? This is almost the number one question I receive every week. TUCOWS stands for "The Ultimate Collection of Winsock Software" or TUCOWS for short. This page has been written to introduce new users to TUCOWS and to provide information into the large amount of information contained on these pages. To begin, the main page for TUCOWS is a list of all the official mirror sites. A mirror site is a 100 % duplication of the primary site on another location somewhere around the world. These are provided so that you can choose the closest, and fastest one for your needs. All the features found in TUCOWS are best viewed with Internet Explorer, NCSA Mosaic or Netscape, or 2.0; client side image mapping and table widths will not function properly with other browsers.

After you pick an official mirror site, you will come to the Main TUCOWS pagel. This page lists the available sections and information to TUCOWS. The Software section link will take you to a page that lists the applications contained within the given section -- for example, the link WWW Browsers, will list all applications that are considered to be World Wide Web Browsers. These pages list information for each application, including a link for downloading the application from TUCOWS (please not that you do not download from another anonymous FTP server, everything is kept on TUCOWS); a rating and a breief description.

Rating System

What are these cows, you ask? We have graded the applications very subjectively. Although not experts on any one of these applications, we have tested each. We have found some applications to be a must have; others are subject to interpretation. This is why we have begun to grade each application. Much like the movie reviews, you may or may not agree!

CowKey:

5 Cows: Must have!
4 - 4.5 Cows: Excellent
3 - 3.5 Cows: Good
2 - 2.5 Cows: Fair
1 - 1.5 Cows: Needs improvement

Cow I use this graphic for applications that I personally like or use most often. This is my personal opinion, so you may or may not agree with this as well.

Tips for TUCOWS Users

1. Try various mirror sites and use the one that is the fastest for you. The primary site is often the busiest, so if there is a site closer to you, we encourage you to use it. All mirror sites are updated around the same time.

2. Have an idea or suggestion about TUCOWS? Use this handy E-Mail form or e-mail your message to tucows@www.tucows.com.

3. Clicking on the new button on the bottom of any page will take you to the What's New page. This page lists all the changes to TUCOWS , and is the best way for users to stay on top of the latest applications.

4. Set your cache as high as practical. Depending on your platform and amount of RAM, allocate enough so that common objects load instantly, like the buttons, for example. They shouldn't "reload" each time; rather, they will remain resident in memory and are instantly displayed.

5. Set your preferences so that images are loaded "after" as opposed to "during" downloading. This way, your computer will render the images in memory and then write them to the screen, rather than try to write them at the same time as the text.

6. Use either Netscape 2.0, Intenet Explorer 2.0, NCSA Mosaic 2.0 or any other browsers that supports tables, backgrounds, sounds and Client-Side-Image-Mapping.

7. Can't find an application that you are looking for? Check out the Index Page. This page alphabetically lists all the apps on TUCOWS.

8. Subcribe to T-MILK. This is our automated mailing list that will keep you infomrmed of everything that is new or what is happening to TUCOWS.

9. Have fun, enjoy, and come back soon!
