What do I DO?
-----------------------
Well, to be perfectly honest...I do everything.
Maybe that's a bit of a stretch, of course I can't do everything.
But I try. Mostly it's all design-related, which translates
loosely to I like to create or do things that make me
happy. Sometimes I consider myself the luckiest guy in the
world. Not that luck really had all that much to do with the way
things have turned out. Hmm...isn't it funny how an opening
paragraph can contain so little information on the subject
matter, yet still be interesting enough to read? :
)
Okay, back to the What topic. What I do for
a living is all based on design. I refer to myself as a Designer
rather than limiting myself to using titles such as Artist,
Illustrator, etc, due to the fact that I tend to do much more
than what an Artist or Illustrator does. Producing end products
from raw materials would sum it up best I guess. Idea Gardener.
Sounds funny, and feels a little 1960's, but that would really
describe what I do. Makes crop marks take on a whole
new meaning. Alright, I never claimed to be a comedian. Go easy
on me.
Work:"Things I Do & Did"
------------------------
I'll keep this part brief to control my rambling which has
become a great way of creating grey space in my bio.
From paperboy to Designer (Idea Farmer), what were the stops
along the way? I could give myself some grandiose titles for the
jobs I've had (kind of like the ones you see in your friends
résumé, where they have changed Crosswalk Guard to
Ground Traffic Controller) but I'll just keep it to a
simple this-is-what-I-did. Paperboy, Warehouseman,
Fire Engine Builder, Graphic Designer, Idea Garde..WAIT! ...what
was that? Fire Engine Builder? Yeah, I get that a lot. But of
course you know..someone has to make them. Actually it
was a great job. I started out in the shop as a
Finisher (someone who takes all the finished
components and puts it all together), then as time went on, I
took on more responsibilities. First Aid Attendant, Quality
Control, Lead Hand, Head Electrician...then I went back to
school. Quick change again huh? Well, when a gardener runs out of
places to plant, where does he grow? Hmm....or I could say I
needed room to grow. I'm really getting some mileage
out of that Idea Gardener title aren't I?
After finishing Design School, I turned down a few offers to work
for some firms and went into business with a fellow student. That
lasted about a year, now he lives back East. We were not only
partners, but good friends. We still are. I just answered another
What question. What does 2 Design mean? It
meant/means that there were two of us. Now I just do the work
of two. (grin) The Work Of 2. So, on with the
show... While working solo, I have had the pleasure of creating
almost everything for every type of medium. From T-shirts to
billboards, hand-sculpted models to 3D computer modeling. From
initial concept to the final product. Ugh, that sounded like an
advertisement. Sorry about that.
Play:"Things I Do 2"
-------------------------
My play content varies as much as my work content does.
I'm still very much a kid at heart. My children appreciate that.
especially when they see my eyes bug out at that new video game
that I want as much as they do. From Trampolines to Tetris,
yup...my interests cover a broad range here too. I must say that
I'm partial to 3D, first person perspective games.
Playing them on the internet against opponents from other
countries is great fun. My name is Walter. I'm a Computer-Geek.
Heh, had to throw that in here. You know what? That's
What. I'm not going to develop my Where
section yet. I've really gotten attached to the Under
Construction piece. Oh, by the way, don't knock over the pylons.
Harvey doesn't like that. : )
