SPAMfighter

Price: Free (test version)
Platform: Windows (all) Microsoft Outlook 2000/2002, 2003 beta 2
Site: www.spamfighter.com

SPAMFighter is a somewhat unique Spam filter that compares your received emails against a list of known Spam stored on the SPAMFIghter server. When it finds a match it automatically removes the spam to a folder of your choice. The best bit is when you receive a Spam message that SPAMFighter doesn’t pick up. By clicking a “block” button, the spam is moved to your spam folder and added to the SPAMFighter online database. This means that users all over the world are collaborating in fighting spam; as soon as an email message is listed as spam by one person, it’s automatically treated as spam by every other user in the world. It works well with Outlook and allows you to create custom Black and White lists, and automatically imports your address book into your white list. Adding an offending email to your blacklist is just as easy and whole domains can be blocked. A very handy tool in the war against spam.

NoteTab Light

Platform: Windows (all)
Price: Free

If plain old Notepad is getting you down, here’s a whiz-bang replacement. Note Tab handles heaps of files through a tabbed interface and comes with so many functions you could spend a year learning them all. The truth is this deceptively simple text editor is actually a very powerful text-processing system with expandable libraries of common text snippets you can drop into a document. But it’s also more than that, allowing to you to store and use libraries of “clips”, a clip being a pre-defined set of text processing actions that have been created using the built programming language. In summary, a free, sophisticated and customisable text processing system that’s well worth a look.

Sheer Power 4GL

Platform: Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP
Price: Free
Site: www.sp4gl.com

Welcome to the Next Generation Programming Language for Windows. SheerPower is a full development language with an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). In plain language, this is a program to write other programs for Windows. It features an easy-to-learn extended basic syntax, with a built-in database engine, and email and Internet functionality.

“Write sexy applications in a snap,” claim the authors, and since their software automatically takes care of: tedious programming tasks such as complex menus, dialog boxes, database access and memory allocation, this may be true. And the catch? like Java, it requires you to also install a virtual machine to run Sheer Power programs.
