Music

Germs includes two original music tracks composed by Michael Leibowitz and Mike Weyandt.

Playing external music tracks

The game also offers you the opportunity of listening to your favourite music while playing.
All you have to do is instruct the program to load music tracks from an external folder of your choice.
The selected folder will then be scanned at startup and all valid audio files in it will be added to an internally managed list.
If you want, you can put aliases to your favorite music files in the external folder: the program will resolve them and load the original files.
The program also scans all subfolders in the external folder with no limit in depth, so avoid selecting the whole hard disk!

Germs supports the following audio file formats:

Audio Format File Type(s) File Extension(s)
Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) 'AIFF', 'AIFC' .aif, .aiff, .aifc
Sun Audio (uLaw) 'ULAW' .au
Standard MIDI File 'Midi' .mid, .midi, .smf
MPEG-1 Level 3 Audio (MP3) 'mp3!', 'MP3!', 'MPG3', 'mpg3', 'Mp3 ', 'MP3 ' .mp3
MPEG-4 Audio: AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) 'M4A ' .m4a
Windows Wave format (WAV) 'WAVE' .wav

Only the above file types (four character codes) and extensions are recognized as valid.

Playing music requires QuickTime 5.0 or later (AAC encoded tracks require QT 6.0 or later).

Selecting a music folder

To select an external music folder open the preferences dialog* and select the "Audio" tab.
In the "Music:" section, click on the checkbox labeled "Play audio files from an external folder located at:" and click on the button labeled "Select Folder...".
A standard Navigation open dialog will appear letting you select a folder on your hard disk.
Click on the "OK" button to confirm your selection and wait for the scanning to complete.

Play mode

Normally, the game tries to load and play a different track on each level.
Music tracks can be played in alphabetical order (Normal mode) or randomly (Shuffle mode).
You can choose your preferred play mode from the popup menu labeled "Play Mode:", located in the "Audio" tab of the preferences dialog.

*To open the preferences dialog click on the "Preferences" button in the title screen or select the corresponding item from the Application menu (the Edit menu under OS 9).
